SCORPIONS release special tour editon of "Return to Forever"

Veröffentlicht am 29. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Tour, News, Heavy Metal, Hardrock, Classic Rock, Beyind The Black

German metal dinosaurs Scorpions released a few month ago their pretty successful new album "Return to Forever". The record was well received and the band is still on tour all over the planet.

March 2016 is the month where the Scorpions are back in their homeland Germany for playing nine shows, supported by Germany's metalk shooting stars Beyond The Black.:

14.03.16 – Stuttgart, Schleyer-Halle
16.03.16 – Munich, Olympiahalle
18.03.16 – Dortmund, Westfalenhalle
19.03.16 – Mannheim, SAP-Arena
21.03.16 – Hamburg, O2-World
23.03.16 – Berlin, O2-World
24.03.16 – Leipzig, Arena
26.03.16 – Frankfurt, Festhalle
27.03.16 – Cologne, LANXESS Arena

In addition to those gigs the band will also release a 'tour editon' of the latest longplayer that includes, next to the twelve original songs, seven bonus tracks. But the real extra you get are the two live DVD's that include two full shows, one recorded at last years Hellfest in France and one in Brooklyn, New York, a show where twelve years old sixstringer Brandon Niederauer contributed with a guest performance for "No One Like You".

Furthermore the release contains some extra material from the US tour, called "On the Road in America" and interviews.

All in all this tour edition is a quite comprehensive package with a lot of goodies. If those are enough in case you call "Return to Forver" already your own is up to you to decide.

CD review ANVIL "Anvil is Anvil"

Veröffentlicht am 29. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Anvil, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, News, CD Review

(8/10) Introducing Anvil would be like carrying sand to the beach. If you haven't heard of Anvil before you either navigated to the wrong blog or you're really young or you missed the legendary documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" ... or all together.

After having had a quite exciting past with some ups and a lot of downers, Toronto-based Anvil is looking forward into a bit more positive future right now. "Hope in Hell", the predecessor, was already pretty good and the new album fits seamless as being a continuation of a re-vitalized Anvil.

Steve 'Lips' Kudlow, Robb Reiner and Chris Robertson hammers eleven new metal highlights right into your ears. The starting triple is already belonging to the jaw-dropping songs on the longplayer. "Daggers and Rum" marks an interesting beginning. Anvil unveils their pirate passion with this number that has a bit of the old Running Wild. It's a cool and unexpected way to open an Anvil album.

What follows next is "Up, Down, Sideways" which is one of these song that have this unique Anvil sound. It's a faster upbeat track, it's a real headbanger. "Gun Conrtol" instead is kept slower and comes with an irresistable riff and the almost hypnotic chorus of this number makes the track even better. This beat is like a hammer hitting the anvil.

A tune that comes with a similar pattern is the slow rolling "Zombie Apocalypse" and with "Ambushed" Anvil has a real live hymn on the record.

Towards the end things get faster again. "Run Like Hell" is introducing a finale furioso before the mighty "Forgive Don't Forget" closes an exciting and entertaining dic. "Anvil is Anvil" - this is more than the title of an Anvil album. This is a statement that gets even more manifested by this longplayer.

Anvil are a band that first of all has excellent songs up their sleeves, something that goes for the new tracks as wel as, of course, for the old classics too. Next to the music Anvil is the best example for dedication, passion and never give up - something that's underground, real, authentic and metal. You guys rock.

CD review RIPPER "Experiment of Existence"

Veröffentlicht am 28. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Ripper, CD Review, News, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, Kreator, Possessed, Slayer

(8/10) In case you're looking for thrash metal that's inspired by the early Kreator, during their "Pleasure to Kill" phase and Possessed, here you go. "Experiment of Existence" delivers exactly this sound, thrash metal which is raw and uncompromising.

The opener "Magnetic Solar Storms" is the first statement on this new longplayer from the Chile-based thrashers. This tune is the beginning of an leven songs lasting riff inferno. The eighties are close.

Ripper manages to build in small details into their sound that makes things quite interesting. Even though "Anthropophagic Life" is an acoustic wrecking ball the tune includes some cool basslines which are well integrated.

The starting triplet gets completed by the title track, a tune that starts with a small intro before hell breaks.

What is surprisingly positive is the instrumental "Anatomy of the Galaxies". An non-vocal thrash song can become boring easily, but the band adds some unexpected and more complex twists - not in general, but in some details.

I mentioned already some basslines. This is brought even further to the extreme since the album features with "Chromatic Fantasy" a bass solo which you don't hear that often. This is, in my opinion a good idea since it breaks the pattern of one riff thunderstorm following the other.

The good thing with Ripper's newest strike is the merciless energy that is transfered by those eleven songs.

This longplayer gives oldschool thrash metal a new appeal, supported by a pretty good sound. The production might be a bit hazily, but thrash metal can handle this and I don't see it as a downer for this release.

Thrash metal fans listen, this is something you should have heard.

CD review THE ROAD VIKINGS "Requiem For an Outlaw Biker"

Veröffentlicht am 28. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in The Road Vikings, Hexx, Power Metal, Heavy Metal, US Metal, News, CD Review

(7/10) This album is confusing, at least it confused me when I heard it the first time. The name of the band, the name of the album, the cover ... all this made me think about a Southern rock influenced classic rock album - the soundtrack for a bike ride into the sunset.

But then I read in the label info, that The Road Vikings is the band of Dan Bryant, the shred guitarist that you might know from the good old days of Hexx. The confusing part is, that all the above mentioned doesn't fit together. The Road Vikings' album  contains power metal with a certain US metal touch. This isn't any Southern Rock stuff, this is pure metal.

Songs like the opener are the best example for how metallic "Requiem For an Outlaw Biker" is. The tune comes with pounding beat, Bryant's husky voice and a neo-classic solo that Malmsteen couldn't have been done better.

"Requiem For an Outlaw Biker" became an interesting album. Bryant combines many different aspects of metal to a power metal album that sounds pretty interesting. So don't let yourself be misled by the cover and name of this longplayer. Power metal fans should check out this release.

  1. I Burn in Hell
  2. The Ballad of Eviel Knievel
  3. The Road to Valhalla
  4. Requiem of an Outlaw Biker
  5. Black Magic Nights
  6. Full Moon

CD review SINBREED "Master Creation"

Veröffentlicht am 27. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Sinbreed, Blind Guardian, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, News, CD Review, Speed Metal

(7/10) Almost two years after having published their latest longplayer "Shadows" German power metal command Sinbreed is ready for a new release. "Master Creation" is the name of the new album which is third one of the four-piece band (guitarist Marcus Siepen recently left the band).

"Creation of Reality" opens the gates to "Master Creation". The song is well chosen since it includes all trademarks of the German four-piece. Fast Teutonic power metal with a good sense for catchy melodies and hard riffs, that's what you get and the history of band members like Frederik Ehmke (Blind Guardian) and also Langhans' contribution to Avantasia can be recognised more than once.

Also some more classic metal moments are included on "Master Creation" by having Maiden-like guitarlines and sing-a-long parts as being part of "Across the Great Divides".

"Moonlit Night" instead is kept in a more moderate pace with Langhans showing the entire potential of his vocal range, something that also goes for "At the Gate". The latter is a ballad that puts the soulful side of Sinbreed into the spotlight.

"Master Creator" is an solid power metal album with this very typical German vibe. All this is fine and dandy with one remark. Each of the tracks is well done and got a really good sound, but I'm missing these special moments and the 'wow' effects. The ten songs are solid and entertaining. It's all good but it feels a bit dusty too. Besides that Sinbreed fans can easily go for the new release.

  1. Creation of Reality
  2. Across the Great Divides
  3. Behind a Mask
  4. Moonlit Night
  5. Master Creator
  6. Last Survivor
  7. At the Gate
  8. The Riddle
  9. The Voice
  10. On the Run

CD review COFFINS/ILSA "Split" 7"

Veröffentlicht am 27. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Coffins, Isla, Death Metal, Doom Metal, Sludge, News, CD Review, Thrash Metal

(*/10) Japanese Coffins and Ilsa from Baltimore release a split 7", The A-side contains Coffins' "Tyrant" while Ilsa contributes with "Cult of the Throne".

Both songs are brutal. "Tyrant" is grooving death metal with an immense riffing and raging leads. When death meets sludge you'll get "Tyrant". This song is a real blast.

What comes can keep the level - easily. Ilsa keeps the tempo a bit more slower than Coffins, enlarged the sludge part and combines it with some grooving death metal elements. "Cult of the Throne" is a savage metal beast that combines the best out of doom and death.

CD review OMNIUM GATHERUM "Grey Heavens"

Veröffentlicht am 26. Februar 2016 von Markus W. in Omnium Gatherum, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, News, CD Review

(8/10) Even though you might not have heard from Omnium Gatherum earlier I can tell you that the guys from Finland are in buisness already since 1996. This means that the sextet will celebrate their 20st anniversary this year and what would be a better thing to do than celebrating this milestone with a new album.

The new disc is called "Grey Heavens" and I can report that it is a really good one. It's already the band's seventh longplayer and I think it is their best one too.

Omnium Gatherum is into melodic death metal and even in the playing field for new suprises isn't that big anymore in this genre, "Grey Heavens" still comes with a 'wow' factor that is maybe missing with some other releases.

The unique trademarks of the Finnish sextet is the combination of different shades of death metal that makes "Grey Heavens" standing out from the rest. If you take the harsh vocals from Amon Amarth, combine them with the melancholy of Amorphis and add some guitar/keyboard interactions a la Dark Age, then you get close to the sound you can expect from Omnium Gatherum's newest goody.

To understand the entire spectra of Omnium Gatherum's new album you should check-out "Foundation" with its bitter sweet melodies, raw vocals, melodic riffs and harmonic keyboards. This track is one of those that comes closest to Dark Age.

The Amorphis cross links are coming back in songs like "Ophidian Sunrise" and last but not least there is an instrumental which is actually the title track. "These Grey Heavens" is a more silent and very melodic track, a song that couldn't paint the picture of grey heavens much better.

To sum up: This album leaves a mark. On the band's Facebook side it's mentioned that the guys play "Adult Oriented Death Metal". No idea what that means, but I can tell you that those ten songs are containing passionate and mature metal that should be on the shopping list of everybody that is into Scandinavian death metal.

  1. The Pit
  2. Skyline
  3. Frontiers
  4. Majesty and Silence
  5. Rejunvenate!
  6. Foundation
  7. The Great Liberation
  8. Ophidian Sunrise
  9. These Gret Heavens
  10. Strom Front
