CD review ANGELUS APATRIDA “Cabaret de la Guillotine”

CD review ANGELUS APATRIDA “Cabaret de la Guillotine”

(7/10) The first thing that I have to face when starting a review is the name of the band I‘m writing about, esp. when it‘s about bands haven‘t had on the radar till now. Angelus Apatrida is such a band. With all respect, the name is a curveball to me, hard to keep in mind - „Angel.... what“. Maybe it‘s only me older brain that struggles with keeping the name in mind.

As said, I missed the guys from Spain up till now and you might have the same. The starting point of Angelus Apatrida was back in 2000 – a new millennium, a new band. The guys premiered in 2006 with “Evil Unleashed” and four more deliveries followed to date. 2018 is the year of Angelus Apatrida’s next strike, entitled “Cabaret de la Guillotine”.

Angelus Apatrida is, according to the label info sheet, a thrash metal outfit. Now doubt, aggressive metal riffing, is a crucial pillar for the band‘s sound.  Songs like „Ministry of God“ are excellent tracks, reminding partly of thrash metal icons like Testament and Destruction.

Next to pure sonic aggression, Angelus Apatrida builds in some melodic power metal moments, like in „The Die is Cast“. However, the majority of songs ignite a thrash metal inferno with blistering leads and harsh vocals.

The thing is though that the approach isn‘t really new. I never got the feeling of something really unique but I also must say that I haven‘t missed ‘new’. The energy provided by this powerhouse is the real benefit and that‘s what‘s count. I would say, good work in known territory.

CD review LORD VIGO "Six Must Die"

CD review LORD VIGO "Six Must Die"

(8/10) After having released two excellent records, spread out over the last years, expectations were pretty high when it comes to „Six Must Die“. Already at this early stage of this review I can tell you that Lord Vigo doesn't disappoint doom metal supporters and fans.

Mighty doom riffs hit you already with „Doom Shall Rise“. Nomen et omen. The song follows a kind of intro that helps to get listeners into the right mood. „I Am the Prophecy“ is next and strengthens the positive impression of „Six Must Die“.

All these songs are very good doom metal tracks, all being part of a dramaturgic setlist that finds its peak in the title track. „Six Must Die“ is an epos with 13 minutes in length. The tune is the real hero if the album, reminding of bands like Lake Of Tears and Count Raven with a bit of Rammstein when it comes to the keyboard sounds. Lord Vigo manages to tell this 13 minutes story in a perfect fashion. There is no single moment you‘re tempted to press the ‚skip‘-button. Excellent soundscapes, hard riffing, embedded samples and a cinematic approach are the fascinating main elements of this milestone in the bands rather short history.

Lord Vigo might not reach the big masses and I even think they shouldn‘t. Of course I don‘t begrudge Lord Vigo big success. It‘s more that the sound of their music covers more of a niche and it‘s the unbound underground vibe that makes this album so vital. Lord Vigo builds their music on creativity and passion and it would be a pity if this would be replaced by reproducing a simple success formula. The underground is, thanks to bands like Lord Vigo, very much alive. Horns up.

CD review SECRET SOCIETY "The Induction"

CD review SECRET SOCIETY "The Induction"

(8/10) „The Induction“ is the result of one and a half years of songwriting, leading to five tracks that ended up on the tracklist of Secret Society‘s new EP. Secret Society is a power metal outfit, hailing from Sweden. I have to admit that I haven‘t heard of the band earlier but what I got to hear sounded really good.

Secret Society could manage some guest appearances for the album, guys that have a solid reputation in rock and metal. Rick Altzi contributed to this release and so did former Metal Church singer Ronny Munroe. Troy Norr, Paul Sabu and Joe Basketts are three more well-known musicians that added to this release and all the effort pays back. „The Induction“ is a pretty cool melodic power metal record that features excellent riffs and catchy melody lines. Things never get too sweet and lazy since the band constantly pushes the pedal to the metal. The awesome monster is on example, but also the powering „Mental Mayhem“ belongs to the best melodic metal brought up to surface since quite a while.

The uptempo opener sets the tone of voice for what to expect from this release, an EP that doesn‘t include a downer. „Broken by Design“ reduces the pace a bit and got a darker vibe before „Waysted“ stands for the Grand finale without taking any prisoners.

This EP belongs to the surprises and even though it stays a mystery who’s part of this outfit it‘s obvious that everybody involved knows what to do for having excellent metal songs on this irresistible release.

CD review ANGEL OF MERCY "The Avatar" - re-issue

CD review ANGEL OF MERCY "The Avatar" - re-issue

(8/10) Shadow Kingdom re-issues some stuff from the underground on June 1st – Angel Of Mercy’s first and only album entitled “The Avatar”.

David St.James formed the band in 1980 and it took the bandleader seven years to write the songs and gather a band to record “The Avatar”. Angel Of Mercy’s headquarter was a rented warehouse in the desert heat of Las Vegas, a location they used as a rehearsal room, but also played concerts in front of more than 200 fans.

The album, “The Avatar”, was self-released on vinyl as a private pressing and was supposed to act as a springboard for getting a record deal. Unfortunately things didn’t work as they should and the deal never appeared. This will change in 2018 after a wait for three decades.

30 years after the recording took place it’s Shadow Kingdom that re-issues this ‘lost’ underground pearl in a 2-CD package that also includes some special bonus goodies.

“The Avatar” is actually a pretty cool album that deserves to get some more attention. Even after 30 years the songs are timeless, reminding of influences by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and some epic metal a la Manilla Road.

Fans of traditional heavy metal should have heard this album that was covered with dust for so many years. It contains good music that’s down to earth, well crafted and full of dedication. These songs were written with passion and this album was recorded with full commitment and without any commercial aim. You can’t get metal more authentic than what you get on “The Avatar”.

CD review MISSION IN BLACK "Anthems of a Dying Breed"

CD review MISSION IN BLACK "Anthems of a Dying Breed"

(7/10) Mission In Black is a rather new metal outfit hailing from Germany. Now 'new' might not be fully correct since it was in 2010 when a first demo has been recorded, followed by some shows, supporting bands like Brainstorm and Mystic Prophecy.

It's five musicians that started their 'mission in black'. Becky Gaber (v), Daniel Tschoepe (g), Andy Flache (d), Martin Grimm (g) and Hannes Jäger (b), that's Mission In Black and some names sound probably familiar. Some guys have been part of South German thrashers Spellbound while Martin Grimm played at Mystic Prophecy.

The quintet inked a contract with German El Puerto label and finally, eight years after their "Black Infect" demo, the debut is ready to be shipped to the record stores. The longplayer consists out of 13 songs that the label info describes as thrash metal. This is definitely the case but there's also a strong power metal influence present through-out. Listening to the melodies and leads reminds me more of Mystic Prophecy than thrash. The latter comes more forefront with the straight-on "Judgement Day".

What stands out are the hoarse vocals of singer Becky Gaber. It took me a while to get used to it. That Gaber has good vocal skills is what becomes obvious with the clean vocals sections, but it's the husky parts that become a bit annoying over time.

Besides this smaller side note "Anthems of a Dying Breed" became an aggressive and powerful debut that also benefits from a proper production and a well-crafted sound. Good music in known territory.

  2. Welcome the Apocalypse
  3. Cold Wings of Vengeance

CD review MICHAEL SCHINKEL'S ETERNAL FLAME "Smoke on the Mountain"

CD review MICHAEL SCHINKEL'S ETERNAL FLAME "Smoke on the Mountain"
(8/10) Eternal Flame released two longplayers at the end of the 90’s / beginning of 2000 before the band announced their disbanding. Ten years after the second album “King of the King” was released it was singer/guitarist Michael Schinkel and Helmut Kohlpaintner who re-ignited Eternal Flame. Another six years later the metal world can welcome Eternal Flames next longplayer “Smoke on the Mountain” and I don’t think that the title, combining “Smoke on the Water” and Man on the Silver Mountain”, is a coincidence.

„Ignition“ is the narrative intro to the album and is followed by the title track. Uptempo guitars and furious leads remind of new-classic metal a la Yngwie Malmsteen. The song is an excellent opener, helping the album to get out of the boxes extremely well. What also stands out are the excellently done vocals by Schinkel, going together with his guitar play very well.

The neo classic vibe continue through-out the entire album but it‘s the opener that unveils the source of inspiration the best. Step by step it‘s classic rock and metal that takes over the scene. Here and there I had to think of the later Rainbow („Got a Rock’n’roll Fever“ & „Close to the End“), Deep Purple („Queen of the Hill“ and „Dreaming“). Jonny Logan‘s „Danger Zone“ sounds like having been the inspiration for the beginning of „Whatcha Gonna Do“.

„Smoke on the Mountain“ might not re-invent the wheel. It‘s the execution that‘s convincing - from a song writing aspect as well as from a production point of view. „Smoke on the Mountain“ is a great album for friends a traditional metal that‘s built on well-crafted hooks, excellent leads and melodic vocals. Worth to spin this album.

  1. Ignition
  2. Smoke on the Mountain
  3. This is My Life
  4. Queen of the Hill
  5. You Can Save Me
  6. Whatcha Gonna Do

CD review ANTHRAX "Kings Among Scotland"

CD review ANTHRAX "Kings Among Scotland"

(*/10) East-Coast thrash pioneers Anthrax played a show at Barrowland Blallroom in Glasgow, Scotland on February 15th, 2017. The show was part of the band’s “Among the Kings”-tour and was built very much around the legendary “Among the Living” album which was performed in its entirety.

The show was filmed and recorded, leading to this new Anthrax release entitled “Kings Among Scotland” of which the CD version is the base for this review. Next to the CD version the release will be available in other formats too, like DVD and BluRay, which gives you an additional visual impression of this intense metal show.

Listening to this live release feels like a journey back in time. Next to the brilliant “Among the Living” album also other highlights from the past found a way on the setlist of this show. Songs like the opener “A.I.R” and “Medusa” are still timeless classics in thrash metal that secure together with new material (“Breathing Lightning” and “Evil Twins”) a seamless thrash metal experience for fans of excellent metal music. This isn’t a coincidence knowing that fans voted on pre-show.

“Kings Among Scotland” is a live album that captures the energy of an Anthrax show in a really good fashion. This five-piece band from NYC belongs to the spearhead of thrash metal and releases, like the current one, shows that these five guys still have a huge appetite for metal and that’s what this live album states in a perfect fashion.

CD review GATEKEEPER "East of Sun"

CD review GATEKEEPER "East of Sun"

(8/10) Cruz Del Sur Music is known for having a portfolio of exciting bands when it comes to more traditional and epic metal. A new addition to it is Canadian metal warriors Gatekeeper. The band was founded in 2009 as a solo project by guitarist Geoff Blackwell. Some EP’s have been recorded and released but the debut was long in coming.

After having inked a deal with Cruz Del Sur Records things gained speed and here it is: “East of Sun”. The debut album features 10 songs of which the last two are covers. Let’s start with those. It’s the legendary “Hall of the Mountain King” (Savatage) and “Death Rider” (Omen) that have been slightly re-arranged and recorded for “East of Sun”. Gatekeeper sticks very much to the original version of these two power metal classics. Of course it’s hard to compete with the originals and I don’t think that it was Gatekeeper’s ambition either. What quintet did though in an excellent way is to keep the spirit alive, adding also some extra power to the classic.

The reason we I started with these two song is, because they reflect very well the influences when it comes to Gatekeeper and their sound. Blackwell and bandmates are into traditional metal that has a stronger epic metal aspect weaved in. While listening to songs like the awesome opener “Blade of Cimmeria” or the uptempo “Warrior Without Fear” reminded me of bands like the mentioned Omen but also Manilla Road came to my mind.

I tune you shouldn’t miss is entitled “Ninefold Muse”. It represents the entire spectrum of Gatekeeper’s sound. Starting slowly and with an epic riff the songs builds up to a heavy rocking metal anthem that will be a delight for fans of powerful metal.

The Canadians, hailing from Vancouver, did a great job when it comes to the debut. “East of Sun” is a great album that mixes melodies and strong riffing in a more old-school fashion without sounding outdated. This album is good stuff for the underground.

  1. Blade of Cimmeria
  2. North Wolves
  3. Warrior Without Fear

CD review RIOT V "Armor of Light"

CD review RIOT V "Armor of Light"

(8/10) I discovered Riot quite late. It was the brilliant 1988 release "Thundersteel" that caught my attention and I had to work backwards when it comes to the band's discography. However, from this moment on Riot belongs to my favourite metal outfits.

A critical moment for Riot was the year 2012 when founding member Mark Reale passed away. Could the band continue without the iconic axeman or do we have to face the end of Riot? Fortunately the quintet went on even though they slightly adjusted the band's name to Riot V. "Unleash the Fire" was the first album of this renewed powerhouse, a longplayer that was critically acclaimed and very well received by fans.

Almost to date four years later, the next Riot V longplayer will be unveiled. The band signed with Nuclear Blast and "Armor of Light" is the first record for the new label, being number 16 in total in Riot's history.

30 years after me enjoying "Thundersteel" for the first time it is "Armor of Light" that is a new delight for metal fans. Things start very successful with a track entitled "Victory". This song is far more than just a bread and butter track. It's a classic metal anthem that reminds of the earlier Iron Maiden when it comes to vocal lines and rhythmic.

Another highlight, framed by only killer tracks, is the title song "Armor of Light". The uptempo tune includes everything you can ask for. Furious guitars, a breathtaking pace and frontman Todd Michael Hall who's a real metal siren. Riot V finds with each of the tunes the magic balance between melodic parts and crushing riffs, both creating something big together rather than competing with each other. It's a combination that creates a terrific sonic pattern and it was producer Chris Collier (Metal Church, Slipknot, Korn) who gave "Armor of Light" the aggressiveness and dynamic needed.

"Armor of Light" is a great next album of Riot V. It proves that the decision to continue was the only senseful one. I'm sure, the metal community will receive this longplayer with open arms. Riot V is still hungry and so are fans of the powerhouse. Horns up.

Pure Steel Records re-issues RAGE's "Execution Guaranteed" classic

Pure Steel Records re-issues RAGE's "Execution Guaranteed" classic

After Pure Steel Records already did the debut “Reign Of Fear” from ’86 now there’s also a vinyl reissue of the second album “Execution Guaranteed” by Power/Speed legends RAGE from Herne/Germany. Released as double pack with gatefold cover - including the remixed version (Tommy Hansen) on the first LP and the original 1987 mix (Andi Musolf) on the second disc - now there’s the possibility for everyone to pick his own favourite.

Starting with the hyper fast “Down By Law” Peavy and his horde take no prisoners and Speed Metal bangers will directly be reminded back to glory old times. With the groovy title track RAGE deliver a perfect anthem in a great mid-tempo, continued by also great songs: “Street Wolf” shows up a decent dark flair, “Deadly Error” starts with a beautiful acoustic intro and with “When You’re Dead” the quartet deliver a great up-tempo smasher to end up this record. During the whole album Peavy is screaming like a maniac and the rhythm section around Jörg Michael sometimes is “faster than hell”, like they sung back in AVENGER.

Now fans of the good old-fashioned Teutonic Speed Metal or people that want to nurse their Noise first pressing from now on have the only chance to buy after 31 years.

DEVIN TOWNSEND announces ERAS Part 1 vinyl collection
Devin Townsend has announced a series of high quality, lavish vinyl collections under the name of ‘ERAS’. The first in this series is released 08th June 2018 and features the quadrilogy of albums that came out during the period of 2009-2011 when the Devin Townsend Project was first created.
The boxset comes with 7LP’s and includes the albums KI, Addicted, Deconstruction and Ghost, marking the first time that the latter two have ever been available on vinyl, while the former have been long out of print. All albums come in gatefold sleeves on 180g vinyl, and have been specially remastered for the format to guarantee the best possible sound and listening experience. The sturdy 2-piece box also includes an LP-booklet that features complete lyrics, liner notes and comments from Devin, and is limited to 2000 copies worldwide. There will be a total of 4 boxsets released over the course of the next few months.
Devin comments: “The Devin Townsend Project, although it went further than I had originally planned, began life as these four albums. Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction and Ghost. The music evolved in line with a period of intense personal growth, and the albums in chronological order were meant to illustrate that change. The amount of people involved with this was extensive, and the journey was one that defined my career in ways I cannot over express. These four albums are really what the Devin Townsend Project was about.
I have been asked repeatedly over the last few years to provide these albums on vinyl, in one set. So we took this opportunity to put together 'ERAS', which is the definitive vinyl box-set encapsulating this period of my life and work that I am exceptionally proud of. As always, this wouldn't have come to fruition without the support of the tremendous audience who has allowed it to flourish, so respect to both yourselves, the people involved, and the music itself, we present to you; 'ERAS'. Thank you for allowing me to continue to do what I do. Devin Townsend”
