SCORPIONS unveil details about “Born to Touch Your Feelings – Best of Rock Ballads”

A pretty safe bet that Christmas is just around the corner can be based on the amount of ‘Best of…’ releases, with some of those solely focusing on the soulful moments of a band. This pattern comes back year by year and also 2017 will not be an exception.

This time it’s the legendary Scorpions that put together a compilation of not only 'ballads', it’s the “Best of Rock Ballads’. I’m not sure if the world was in restless wait for such an album, but … it comes with three new songs, some remastered versions and some more. In this sense there's coming some more joy with these ballads than just another version of "Wind of Change".

“Born to Touch Your Feelings – Best of Rock Ballads” will be released on November 24th and includes the following tracklist:

  1. Born To Touch Your Feelings (“MTV Unplugged” Studio Edit)
  2. Still Loving You (“Comeblack” Version)
  3. Wind Of Change (“Comeblack” Version)
  4. Always Somewhere (2015 Remaster)
  5. Send Me An Angel (New Acoustic Version 2017)
  6. Holiday (2015 Remaster)
  7. Eye Of The Storm (Radio Edit)
  8. When The Smoke Is Going Down (2015 Remaster)
  9. Lonely Nights
  10. Gypsy Life
  11. House Of Cards (Single Edit)
  12. The Best Is Yet To Come
  13. When You Came Into My Life (“MTV Unplugged” Studio Edit)
  14. Lady Starlight (2015 Remaster)
  15. Follow Your Heart (New Full-Band Version 2017)
  16. Melrose Avenue (New Song)

CD review ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO "Live Unbound"

Veröffentlicht am 17. März 2017 von Markus W. in Alex Skolnick Trio, AST, CD Review, Jazz, Testament, Rock, Scorpions, Aerosmith, News

(*/10)I have to admit that jazz normally doesn't belong to my favorite styles of music and when entering the world of free jazz even leads to confusion. However, this album is maybe the foot in the door to jazz music. It’s not that it's the songs itself that brought the curiosity. It's Alex Skolnick's name that led to fact me listening to "Live Unbound".

As the title says, it's an album with a live component. It includes seven songs of which the first ones have been recorded in December 2014 live at Spin Studios New York.

"Unbound" and "Culture Shock" are two brand new songs that kick off the album and even non-jazz fans can find their way into these tracks. It's great music for a relaxed Sunday afternoon, performed by three great musicians.

The next three songs, "Shades of Grey", "99/09" and "Veritas" are know from earlier studio releases while the live versions of Aerosmith's "Dream On" and "Still Loving You" show the classics with a new livery. Totally re-arranged and with a fully new expression these rock classic shine in new splendor. "Dream On" comes in a ten minutes version while "Still Loving You" shines for almost twenty minutes with a quite bluesy ending.

Alex Skolnick's passion is the guitar and not the genre and the Alex Skolnick proves this very well. Even though you might be a die-hard Testament fans you should listen to this album because it shows another side of one of the most influential thrash metal guitarist.

German metal dinosaurs Scorpions released a few month ago their pretty successful new album "Return to Forever". The record was well received and the band is still on tour all over the planet.

March 2016 is the month where the Scorpions are back in their homeland Germany for playing nine shows, supported by Germany's metalk shooting stars Beyond The Black.:

14.03.16 – Stuttgart, Schleyer-Halle
16.03.16 – Munich, Olympiahalle
18.03.16 – Dortmund, Westfalenhalle
19.03.16 – Mannheim, SAP-Arena

24.03.16 – Leipzig, Arena
26.03.16 – Frankfurt, Festhalle
27.03.16 – Cologne, LANXESS Arena

In addition to those gigs the band will also release a 'tour editon' of the latest longplayer that includes, next to the twelve original songs, seven bonus tracks. But the real extra you get are the two live DVD's that include two full shows, one recorded at last years Hellfest in France and one in Brooklyn, New York, a show where twelve years old sixstringer Brandon Niederauer contributed with a guest performance for "No One Like You".

Furthermore the release contains some extra material from the US tour, called "On the Road in America" and interviews.

All in all this tour edition is a quite comprehensive package with a lot of goodies. If those are enough in case you call "Return to Forver" already your own is up to you to decide.

CD review SCORPIONS "Savage Amusement" 50th Anniversary Edition

Veröffentlicht am 5. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, News, CD Review, Hardrock, Heavy Metal, NWoBHM, Power Metal, Rock, Classic Rock

(*/10) “Savage Amusement” followed the highly successful “Love at First Sting” and it was the first album that couldn’t convince as much as the predecessor. Maybe it was due to the stressful life on tour or it was due to the more commercial metal that gained momentum at the end of the 80’s that “Savage Amusement” is missing the ease and the lightheartedness of the earlier records. The sound became more polished and the edges were missing.

The longplayer had some stellar songs, like “Rhythm of Love” and “Don’t Stop at the Top”, but there have been also numbers on “Savage Amusement” that couldn’t live up to the milestones the fans got used to get from the five guys. Songs like “Media Overkill” sum it up very well. “In the end they try to eat your soul” is one of the lines in “Media Overkill” and it feels like this, in real life, limited the creativity of the band during the song writing process for the 1988 released album.

“Savage Amusement” is the last album that was produced by Dieter Dierks and it marks the end of an era.

Like on the other discs from this anniversary series also “Savage Amusement” is full of gift from the Scorpions treasure chest. Six unreleased songs and demo tracks enrich the longplayer and are again of big value for collectors.

All eight albums that have been part of the 50st anniversary edition stand for an important, if not the most important era in the life of the German hardrockers. It documents their way from early classic rock based days towards a loud metal band. It contains all the highlights that are evergreens and that are still part of almost each Scorpions show.

Happy birthday Scorpions.

CD review SCORPIONS "World Wide Live" 50th Anniversary Edition

Veröffentlicht am 4. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Hardrock, News, CD Review, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, Rock, NWoBHM

Even though "Tokyo Tapes" was already an excellent live record, the 1985 release "World Wide Live" is the by far best compilation the band ever published. This live album belongs, together with Iron Maiden "Live After Death" and Deep Purple's "Made in Japan", to the alltime faves when it comes to concerts archived on an album.

Recorded in San Diego, Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, Paris and Köln, this fantastic longplayer contains the best of the best the Scorpions have ever written and released. Newer tracks from "Backout" and "Love at First Sting" goes hand in hand with earlier classics such as the excellent "The Zoo" and "Holiday", one of the best Scorpions ballads ever. This album is pure power with a sound that is outstanding. It captures the live vibe by still sounding clear, powerful and nuanced.

The band was also followed on this tour by a film crew and the result can be seen on the bonus DVD. It contains the entire documentary done at that time.

Even if you call the album already your own there is enough new stuff coming with this anniversary edition, that justifies buying this version.

CD review SCORPIONS "Love At First Sting" 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Veröffentlicht am 3. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Hardrock, News, CD Review, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, NWoBHM, Power Metal

"Blackout" was the worldwide breakthrough for the Scorpions, followed by extensive touring. The question that needed an answer was, if all this will have an impact on the next studio release. It might had an effect, but for sure no bad one. "Love At First Sting" became one of the most commercialy successfull Scorions records that, again, was full of metal anthems that are hits till this day.

"Rock You Like a Hurricane", "Coming Home" and "Big City Nights" don't need any further explanation. Those tracks are omnipresent by still getting a lot of airplay. And not to forget one of the most played ballads - "Still Loving You".

And even though "I'm Leaving You" might not keep the extremely high level of the other songs, "Love at First Sting" became the expected next milestone of the Scorpions.

That the thrilling artwork was impressive for young dudes at that time goes without.

The bonus on this album is some songs from the show played at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1984 plus again unreleased songs from the "Love at First Sting" session. An impressive collection.

CD review SCORPIONS "Blackout" 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Veröffentlicht am 3. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Hardrock, Heavy Metal, News, CD Review, Blackout, Power Metal, Classic Rock, NWoBHM

"Blackout" was my first Scorpions album and I think that it's still the best longplayer the band from Hannover ever released. The combination of heavy songs and the outstanding artwork by Gottfried Helnwein is an excellent symbiosis that makes the album to something very special.

But in the end it's more than this. The density of great songs is lifting this disc to a very special one. Real metal smashers like "Blackout", "Now!" and "Dynamite" shine next to midpace anthems such as "Can't Live Without You". But also the slow grooving "Arizona", a songs where you can feel the heat while listening, and the strong power ballad "When the Smoke is Going Down" are numbers written for eternity. There is no single filler on the album.

Like with the other records from this anniversary series also "Blackout" has some extras. A demo version of the title track give "Blackout" a slightly different expression and with "Running For the Plane", "Sugar Man", All My Love" and "Searching For the Rainbow" the CD comes with four unreleased demo songs from the 1982 recording session.

A DVD with the legendary performace at "Rock Pop in Concert" and a 40 minutes interview complete a very well done and valuable special edition of one of the most influencial metal records. A 'must have'.

CD review SCORPIONS "Animal Magnetism" 50th Anniversary Edition

Veröffentlicht am 2. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Hardrock, Classic Rock, News, Heavy Metal, CD Review

(*/10) Scorpions started with "Animal Magnetism" into the 80's - a decade that was supposed to become one of the most successful ones in the band's history.

The longplayer shows in a very good way the development of the band over time. And it is the real link between "Lovedrive" and the masterpiece "Blackout". Even though the album was done under quite some time pressure between two tours it contains a few alltime hits of the Hannover five-piece.

The opener" Make it Real", a true Scorpions anthem, is part of the record as well as metallic "Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)" which shows a heaviness that culmulated in the next album.

The title track with its strong groove and heavy riff shows the Scorpions from the more experimental side, while the transcedent "The Zoo" plays in a league of its own.

Like on the other anniversary editons also this record comes with a lot of extras like demo tracks and "Hey You" with vocals by Rudolf Schenker.

"Animal Magnetism" is a great release that has added value for fans of the band and  shows the bigger crowd that the band from Hannover has much more to offer than the far too often heard "Winds of Change".

CD review SCORPIONS "Lovedrive" 50th Anniversary Edition

Veröffentlicht am 2. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Hardrock, News, CD Review, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, Rock

(*/10) The first album of the post-Roth era is called “Lovedrive” from 1979. A young new axeman from Hannover became part of the band and also Michael Schenker, Rudolf’s brother, joined during the recording session for the longplayer. He added some solo parts on Scorpions milestones like the title track, “Another Piece of Meat” and “Coast to Coast”. In this sense “Lovedrive” is the only album in the bands 50 years long history where three guitarists have been participating.

As said, “Lovedrive” marks the beginning of a new successful era. Songs got more heavy, like “Another Piece of Meat”, but great ballads have found a home on this record. “Holiday” is a part of the album and became one of the all-time highs for the guys from Hannover.

In the extras you will find, amongst others, a demo version of “Holiday” and “Cause I Love You”. The DVD contains live recordings from Japan, captured on the 1979 tour. Next to that you’ll find a 45 minutes interview special on the DVD in which the musicians reveal details about the production process of “Lovedrive”.

CD review SCORPIONS "Tokyo Tapes" 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Veröffentlicht am 1. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Heavy Metal, Hardrock, Classic Rock, CD Review, News, Rock

(*/10) "Tokyo Tapes" was the first live album of the Scorpions. The band still tried to find some solid ground in Europe while they have been already quite popular in the land of the rising sun.

The disc documents the two shows in Tokyo that the Scorpions performed in the Nakano Sun Plaza. It was also the last Scorpions release with Jon Uli Roth on guitar which gives the recording a special weight.

Surprising is the excellent quality of this live recording esp. when considering the year of 1979 when technical possibilities have been limited compared to modern times.

Also this iconic live album contains specialities. There are unreleased live versions of "Polar nights", "Hell Cat", "Catch the Train", He's a Woman - She's a Man" and "Robot Man" on the second CD as well as "Kimi Ga Yo", the national anthem of Japan performed by the guys from Hannover. What a special moment.

The regular longplayer was and is already one of the best live albums ever. But enriched by the additional songs this anniversary edition is a 'must' for each serious metal collection.

CD review SCORPIONS "Taken by Force" 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

Veröffentlicht am 1. November 2015 von Markus W. in Scorpions, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, News, CD Review, Power Metal, Hardrock, Rock

(*/10) To celebrate the 50th anniversary as a band is a special moment. Not that many rock groups can claim such a milestone for them. One of the bands that are belonging to this special category are German metal legend Scorpions.

The story of the band from Hannover, Germany started in 1965 but it took the guys a few years to also score some success. In 1977 the band started to work together with producer legend Dieter Dirks and released with "Taken By Force" and album that brough the band quite some attention. Seven more records followed and the success story of the five-piece started to. The band was heading from one peak to another, played huge festivals and sold millions of records.

The Scorpions uses the opportunity of the band's anniversary to re-release the eight record between 1977 and 1988. "Taken By Force", "Tokyo Tapes", "Lovedrive", "Animal Magnetism", "Blackout", "Love at First Sting""World Wide Live" and "Savage Amusement" went through a new mastering and will be re-released in a special 50th anniversary edition that also includes unreleased tracks, liner notes, photos,...

"Taken by Force" is originally from 1977 and was the last studio album with Uli Jon Roth on guitar. The album contains classic such as "He's a Woman - She's a Man" and "Steamrock Fever". But next to the songs from the regular album there are some extras on the longplayer.

"Busy Guys" is a great grooving hardrocker and also the demo version of the semi-ballad "Believe in Love" is good stuff; not only for collectors. "Midnight Blues Jam" is exactly what the title promises; a well done blues number with a Scorpions-hardrock touch. A song that was never released before is "Blue Dream". It's an instrumental that is a classic rock masterpiece. But it's also a song that was never finished. A demo version of the album track "Born to touch Your Feelings" finalizes an album that has a lot of extra value for Scorpions fans, but that is also a great opportunity for each and everybody that only knows "Winds of Change" and that wants to discover more of the iconic band.

CD review NEW LIGHT CHOIR "Volume II"

Veröffentlicht am 2. August 2015 von Markus W. in New Light Choir, Scorpions, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath, News, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock, Hardrock, CD Review

(8/10) New Light Choir is a duo. It's John Niffenegger (v, g, b, m-tron) and Chris Dalton (d) that founded the band in 2010 and New Light Choir is so far a pure studio project without having live activities planned yet.

The title of the album leads to an assumption that the new album is already longplayer number two of the duo. No, it's their debut. It comes with ten songs that are mainly inspired by bands like Black Sabbath, Scorpions and Uriah Heep.

"Higher fire" was chosen to be the opener of the record. We are talking about a powerful first track with a galloping rhythm and a good punch. All in all a good start.

The next track is named "All I need" which is a melancholic rock song that reminded me to Nick Cave; at least the music and less the vocals. This 'grey vibe' comes back in a few more numbers like "December flying" and the hypnotic "April witch" - a tune, that belongs to the best ones on the record.

But New Light Choir also knows how to increase speed. Tracks like the awesome "Frost and fire" and the speedy "New light in October" are cool tracks that shows the variability of New Light Choir's sound.

"Volume II" which is actually 'volume I' is a great classic rock album that contains well done songs. Each classic rock and retro fan should check out "Volume II".
