CD review DOGFACE "Back on the streets"

Veröffentlicht am 31. Dezember 2013 von Markus W. in Dogface, Yngwie Malmsteen, Candlemass, Therion, CD Review, News, Hardrock

(8/10) Mats Leven is for sure no newcomer. The Swedish singer is/was already busy in several bands since 27 years. Most of you have heard him probably in bands like Candlemass, Treat, Therion, Yngwie Malmsteen and Kurx – to mention just some of them. Next to those bands Leven is also singing for Dogface. Dogface is a plays classic rock oriented hardrock and released two albums in the beginning of 2000. Now, 11 years after the release of “In control”, the band, which was also renewed in all these years, came out with their third record named “Back on the street”.

Looking into the songs. They are superb hardrockers which are in the tradition of bands like Whitesnake and Europe. The opener “Footsteps on the moon” is a midtempo rocker with a pounding rhythm. “Can’t face tomorrow” increase the speed a bit and could also be a better Europe song from their earlier 80’s period. Talking about up-tempo – also “Back on the streets” fits into this category. I was reminded a bit to “Out in the fields” from Gary Moore.  “The fall” is a great blues based song with a Hammond organ solo half way. Sounds cool. With “Crazy horses” the record has also a cover version from an old The Osmonds. Dogface adds their own identity to the song which makes it a good cover version. The last song on the album is called “Freaking out” and stands out from the other material on “Back on the streets”. It transports a really mad vibe and sounds more like one of the older Alice Cooper songs from the 70’s with a Pink Floyd-like guitar solo in the middle. Great to see that the band also tries out this kind of things.

“Back on the street” became the expected good hardrock album and it seems that the 11 years break was re-energizing for the band. Good stuff.

Crowdfunding project for UNDERTOWs "In deepest silence" as vinyl

Veröffentlicht am 30. Dezember 2013 von Markus W. in Undertow, News, Heavy Metal, Doom Metal

German groove and doom metal band Undertow released their new album "In deepest silence" a few weeks ago and received excellent feedback for this record (see also review further down).

Now the band and the label decided to enter new territory. They want to see, if there is also an interest for a good old vinyl version of "In deepest silence".

A crowdfunding project is started up were you can pre-order the vinyl. Check the link for more and further details.

Sounds like a good initiative.

CD review TRAUMA "Scratch and scream" (re-release)

Veröffentlicht am 30. Dezember 2013 von Markus W. in Trauma, Heavy Metal, News, CD Review, Thrash Metal, Power Metal, Metallica

(7/10) Shrapnel Records reissued the debut album from Trauma called “Scratch and scream”. Trauma was founded in 1980 in the Bay Area and released the “Scratch and scream” album in 1984. “Such a shame” was the very first song the band recorded and it was released on Metal Blades compilation “Metal Massacre II”.

The original line-up included Michael Overton (g), George Lady (g), Dennis Shafer (d), Donny Hillier (v) and Cliff Burton (b). Yes, Cliff Burton, who joined Metallica at a later stage and became famous with them, was part of Trauma in the beginning.

The re-release of “Scratch and scream” is remastered from the original master tapes and contains also bonus tracks with Cliff Burton on bass. Next to that the album was never released on CD – now it is.

The songs reflect the typical Bay Area sound of those days. Trauma plays a mix out of US metal and speed metal. The songs and the little bit higher vocals of Hillier (I had to get used to those higher vocals) reminded me to bands like Liege Lord, Anthrax (the early days), Lizzy Borden and partly Anacrusis. The songs are kept more basic and straight forward with a lot of shred guitars. Eventhough the album is remastered it still sounds oldschool. I don’t mean this negative at all. It spreads that typical underground vibe which I miss with so many clean and polished productions nowadays. 'Oldschool' in the best meaning of the word. For me this album needs to be part of every well sorted metal collection.

After many years Trauma reformed recently in the line-up Donny Hillier (v), Kris Gustofson (d), Lucas Advincula (b) and Kurt Fry (g). The band is in the studio as we speak and finalizes the recording of a new Trauma album. I’m curious. In the meantime check out "Scratch and scream".

CD review ICED EARTH "Plagues of Babylon"

Veröffentlicht am 28. Dezember 2013 von Markus W. in Iced Earth, Heavy Metal, CD Review, News

(8/10) I'm following Iced Earth since their very first album, actually since they released the first demo "Enter the realm" in 1989. And in all those years the band never released an average album. All their records had really good metal songs from a high quality. This also continues with the new album called "Plagues of Babylon".

"Plagues of Babylon" is the eleventh record from Iced Earth and it contains 12 songs and one outro. It is the second album with Stu Block doing the vocals. Honestly, after all the changes backwards and forwards at the mic I was doubting about a positive progression of the band. But what became obvious with "Dystopia" finds its prolongation on the new album. Already at this stage I can say that Stu's voice again fits perfect to the sound of Iced Earth. Stu sings with even more self-confidence on the new album what adds extra power to the new songs.

Talking about the new song we can say, that we have typical Iced Earth songs, meaning, all the trademarks of the band are included. The cool riffs from Jon Schaffer, as well as his galloping guitar sounds which makes the band pretty unique. There is one small exeption which is called "Highwayman". This is a cover version from an old Jimmy Webb song from 1977 (listen to the great version of Johnny Cash, Wllie Nelson,...) and sounds OK, eventhough it feels disconnected. The Iced Earth got support from Mikael Poulsen and Russell Allen for this song.

But let's have a look on the song written by the band itself. They are in average a bit longer than the ones on "Dystopia". Already the opener, which is the title track and starts with a heavy drum beat and a cool guitar melody, is almost eight minutes long. After the intro to this song it becomes a typical Iced Earth smasher with a cool middle part which includes some acoustic guitars and spoken words. A great start. Other tracks in this category is "The end?" and "Peacemaker". Esp. the last mentioned one has a strong NWOBHM component. The leads and soli remind me to bands like Iron Maiden. Next to these more epical songs there are also the shorter and to the point tracks like "Parasite" and "Resistance". Awesome headbangers.

"Plagues of Babylon" became a varied metal album and a great start into 2014. Happy new year.

CD review BERGREN KERSLAKE BAND (BKB) "The sun has gone hazy"

Veröffentlicht am 22. Dezember 2013 von Markus W. in Bergren Kerslake Band, Blues Rock, CD Review, News, BKB

(7/10) The Bergren Kerslake Band is a cooperation between Swedish singer, guitarist and keyboarder Stefan Bergren and drummer Lee Kerslake. The first mentioned one is maybe known by some of you since he was part of bands like e.g. Snakes In Paradise and Kerlake is well-known as being the drummer of Uriah Heep.

The history of the two guys gives already a hint on the music of the album. “The sun has gone hazy” became a blues rock album which makes fun to listen to. Eventhough the music and the sound aren’t very new the album is very entertaining. The production, done by Bergren, is good, powerful and has that typical warm blues sound.

„Walk tall“ is a fantastic opener. This song is blues pure and has an energizing drive. A cool song. “Super sonic dream” is a nice fast track. I had to think about Blackfoot when I heard the track the first time. Another fave of mine is the title track "The sun has gone hazy". It's a grooving midtempo rocker with a great chorus. "Back on the road agian" starts a bit like Davy's on the raod again from Manfred Mann. But this is just in the beginning. The hammond organ gives the song a warm background and the hooks just stick. The choir in the chorus is the cherry on the pie. There is of course also a ballad called “Born again”. Not a highlight, but a song with a lot of passion and feeling. This is what counts.

“The sun has gone hazy” became a good blues rock album which I can recommend to all fans from bands like Whitesnake to ZZ Top.
