Iconic IRON MAIDEN singer BRUCE DICKINSON published "What Does This Button Do?"

Introducing Bruce Dickinson feels like carrying sand to the beach. If you're interested in metal there's now way around it, knowing the iconic frontman of NWoBHM spearheads Iron Maiden. The legendary singer from Worksop, England started was part of many bands of which Iron Maiden is the by far best known one. There was a life before Maiden though, days when Dickinson was the singer of Samson. The singer was part of the two most important Samson records - "Head On" and "Shock Tactics" - before he replaced Paul Di'Anno as vocalist of Iron Maiden. The singer also had some solo records in the pipeline, which were mainly released during the 90's when Dickinson focused on his own band and project.

Next to his musical career the sympathic singer also has the got the gift of being multi-talented. Amongst many other things it’s fencing being one of his passions outside of music and also him being a pilot for planes like a Boeing 747 shows the variety of interest more than well. Having such an exciting and interesting vita can only lead to one conclusion - writing a biography. In this case it's even an autobiography, which was published a few weeks ago, showing an additional talent of Dickinson.

"What Does This Button Do" is the title of an exciting reading experience. Things began in 1958, the year of birth of Dickson. His grandparents raised him as an only child till 1963, the year when Dickinson’s younger sister was born. The singer gives a lot of insights into his youth, sharing exciting stories that are entertaining and easy to read. In another chapter he describes the days in Samson and the first touch point with Iron Maiden. Samson entered the Battery Studios in Willesden for recording the „Shock Tactics“ album and it was Martin Birch, working next door on Iron Maiden’s „Killer“ record, days when Samson was headliner and Iron Maiden support act.

The book is full with all these anecdotes and stories from Dickinson’s exciting life of which the diagnosed cancer is also a part. The singer describes things in an extremely open way towards the end of the book. On one of the last pages Dickinson mention that he got so often the question about, if, in retrospective, he would do some things different when it comes to his life and career and he also states that the answer was always a clear ‚No‘. I think that this describes the iconic frontman in an excellent way. Life isn’t a simulation. Life is real and it includes also failure and mistakes as a part of developing an own personality.

"What Does This Button Do?" is a comprehensive and thrilling summary of important moments in Dickinson's life. The book covers important milestone in and stories, told in a very open way as it can be expected from the extrovert legend in metal. It provides insights that are captured in an enthralling way which makes this book to an enjoyable reading experience, not only for metal fans.

Book review "Systemstörung. Die Geschichte von Noise Records"

Veröffentlicht am 25. März 2017 von Markus W. in Noise Records, Book, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Tech Metal, Prog Metal, News, Kreator, Voivod, Blind Guardian, Grave Digger, Tankard, Celtic Frost Hellhammer

Noise Records was one of the highly influential metal labels during the 80’s. The label was started by Ulrich Walterbach in 1984 and can be seen as a crucial factor in the history of heavy metal. Iconic bands like Kreator, Helloween, Grave Digger and Celtic Frost, but also bands from overseas like Canadian tech-thrashers Voivod have been signed by the label and released their first records; most of them still classics in metal. The most successful release was definitely Helloween’s “Keeper of the Seven Keys” cyclus with part 2 being sold more than 1 million times. In 2001 Noise Records became a part of Sanctuary Records and the brand slowly disappeared.

15 years later there’s a re-vitalisation of Noise Records that takes place, bringing some of the 80’s classic back into the spotlight. Under the banner of “Noise lebt!” compilations of Kreator, Tankard, and some more have been published end of 2016 and there is a comprehensive release of the first three Voivod classic planned for end of April this year.

Next to all that the history of Noise Records was written down in a book named “Systemstörung. Die Geschichte von Noise Records”. I got the German version but there's an English version too - "Damn the Machine. The Story of Noise Records". The book describes the raise and fall of the iconic label. 75 interviews with Walterbach, employees and colleagues have been the base for 504 pages, telling an interesting story, giving insights into one of the important labels in metal. Author and journalist David E. Gehlke did a real deep dive when it comes to the story of Noise Records, enriched with 225 photos.

Last but not least you might recognised the artwork of this book. Indeed, it was Voivod’s Michael ‘Away’ Langevin who did the front cover artwork and no one less than Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch wrote a foreword for this amazing book.

"Choosing Death - Die Unglaubliche Geschichte von Death Metal und Grindcore geht weiter..."

Veröffentlicht am 27. Oktober 2016 von Markus W. in Book, Death Metal, Grindcore, Punk, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Hardcore, News, Review

When death metal and grindcore started in the mid 80's things began slow, but not easy. And it wasn't a silent start either. These extreme styles in heavy metal have been like a blast wthin the existing metal scene, adding a new shade to heavy music.

Author Albert Mudrian took these genres and did a deep dive into the history of death metal and gringcore. The result is an impressing book that starts with the very early days when hardcore, metal and ounk merged to a new sound that grew over time.

The new version of "Choosing Death" is a entirely re-worked version that includes three extra chapters which mean 100 additional pages. A nice xtra comes at the end when a discogrpahy lists the most influencial longplayers - starting with Possessed's "Seven Churches" up to records like Hate Eternal' "Infernus" from 2015.

All in all this book is well-done, fact-based and entertaining. If you always wanted to know more about the roots and the history of death metal and grindcore, then you should read this book that could be a nice Christams present too.
