CD review OUTSHINE "Prelude to descent"

Outshine from Sweden's Gothenburg are a quartet which plays dark metal with some little grunge influences. They released a few weeks ago their new album "Prelude to descent", which is number three in the band's history. We can state that the band is not a real newcomer, since they were founded already in the late 90's. I think, that the band so far got the most attention in their home country Sweden and in the US. In the rest of Europe they are not that very well known. But this might chance now.

The band names as main inspiration Type O Negative, Alice In Chains and Paradise Lost. I think, that last-mentioned band had the biggest impact on Outshine. At least songs like "Addiction" lead me to this conclusion. But also "Here now" underlines this, even though the vocals have a touch of Billy Idol in the verse. There are also darker songs on the album. "In you I met me (Caroline)" and "I was nothing" belongs to that category. Not really happy swinging songs, but with good hooks and melodies.

Outshine is another good band from Gothenburg (At The Gates, In Flames and recently Bombus). This city seems really to have potential for bands. But this is of course not new :)

"Prelude to descent" is to recommend. The songs find a good compromise between heaviness and melody, darkness and harmony. Fans of Paradise Lost's "Draconian Times" should check out this album. I like it.
