CD review HAKEN "The mountain"

Honestly I heard about Haken, but I was never really gave special attention to the band. Now, after I was listening to their new album "The mountain" I have to admit, that this was a mistake. I'm very positively surprised about the band. They released a good album which combines a high quality with good song.

For me the band is mainly to compare with Yes and Queen. This shows already, that their are very good musicians at work, since the comparison is very demanding - but they live up to it. After a kind of intro called "The path" the first song starts. The seven minute long "Atlas stone" has a great verse and a highly harmonic chorus. The song has also some choir parts which reminds me even a little bit the old German band Eloy (if you know, if they are still exisitng please place a comment). "Cockroach king" could come from a musical and is build on a dominant rhythm. Eight minutes of enjoyment. The almost funky "In memoriam" and the Relaxed " "because it's there" are as well as convincing as the 11 minute epos "Falling back to earth", which is one of the heavier tracks on the album.

Haken created with "The mountain" a great prog album, which finds the right mix between musical perfection and harmony. Great musicians with great songs. A treat for your ears. And you can listen to the album many times - you always find something new. I will now check their previous records as well.
