CD review ROCK GODDESS "It's More Than Rock'n'Roll"

(6/10) It feels like the band needed ten years for each song on this three track EP. Of course this isn’t the case but it’s a fact that the London-based trio published a debut back in 1983 with two more records that followed. Rock Goddess is Jody Turner (g/v), Tracey Lamb (b) and Julie Turner (d) – a band that releases with “It’s More Than Rock’n’Roll” an EP that features three new tracks.

It’s a bit hard to give this release the right spot. There is the comparison with the bands earlier days which I, honestly spoken, missed. Then there was a hiatus and a re-grouping in 2013 with some live shows. Another 4 years later there’s the new EP with three songs and the remaining question is, if this the start of a new era of Rock Goddess or just a sign of live that captures the joy of recording new material. Time will tell and in the meantime we can listen to the new tunes.

Now, some of you might be used to my metaphors and here’s another one. There is a cappuccino which is tasty and fine, but there’s also a double espresso that pumps pure caffeine into your veins. What the trio from London, UK delivers is more the cappuccino than the double espresso.

The three songs are well done and ‘tasty’, no doubt. It’s a solid metal experience that comes with an old-school vibe and makes you walking down the memory lane. But if you’re expecting a mind-blowing metal smasher you will be disappointed.

The title track kicks it off. It’s a mid-tempo rocker that’s nice but also raises the question, what is it if it’s more than rock’n’roll? “Back Off” is next and is the best track on this EP. Is it only me who was reminded of Motley Crue’s “Looks That Kill” while listening to the number? The riff-based “We’re All Metal” closes an EP that marks a return of Rock Goddess; a disc with songs in a time-warp. If it’s retro, old-school or dusty is what you need to decide for yourself.
