CD review SICK OF IT ALL "When the Smoke Clears"

Veröffentlicht am 13. November 2016 von Markus W. in Sick Of It All, Hardcore, Punkrock, Punk, News, CD Review

(8/10) Fans can look back on three decades of Sick Of It All - an anniversary the band celebrates together with their fans by releasing a new EP with five tracks that are reflecting Sick Of It All with 100%.

The New York hardcore dinosaur stays true to themselves. These five songs don't deliver epical soundscapes. The total running time is 11 minutes which stands for brutal hardcore reduced to its essence.

The first two minutes are used by the grooving opener "When the Smoke Clears". This song belongs to the best ones the band has published up till now. With "Black Venom" this get even more aggressive, showing a band that is still hungry.

Compared to the more metallic expression of "Black Venom it's "Doomed Campaign" that reflects Sick Of It All's punk influences with a melodic chorus included that makes it stick to your mind in no time.

Things continue with the intense "Blood & Steel" before "Fortress" rounds of an EP that includes everything fans of the band want to listen to. Aggressiveness, groove, shouts, riffs and unstoppable energy, all boiled down to five songs that are a pleasure for supporters of the band as well as giving newcomers a clear overview of what to expect from all the earlier studio releases of the genre-influencing band.

This was the musical section of "When the Smoke Clears", but fans get even more since there is a 60 pages booklet included in this release. The CD provides you with sonic overview of 30 years of Sick Of It All and it's the booklet that visualizes the years between 1986 and 2016. It's filled with a lot of great photos and some liner notes, all in all a comprehensive documentation featuring the various steps of one of the most important hardcore bands.

CD review RYKER'S "Never Meant to Last"

Veröffentlicht am 10. Oktober 2015 von Markus W. in Ryker's, Sick Of It All, Hardcore, Punkrock, Punk, News, CD Review, Mosh

(8/10) Ryker's, never call them The Ryker's, have released an excellent reunion EP a few months ago that is now followed by a brand new studio longplayer. Perfect news for each hardcore fan. What makes this news even better is the fact that the guys from Kassel might got a few years older but didn't loose any power during this period of absence. It was already inicated by the EP and finds its continuation on "Never meant to last" - the guys are back in old strength. In contrast to the title of the new longplayer I must say that this disc is recorded to last.

The first thing that stands out is the new man behind the mic. Kid-D left the band after many years but there is all good. Ryker's found in no time an excellent replacer. Dennis (aka Sergeant D.) took over the vcoals and he fits perfect to the sound of Ryker's.

Fourteen hardcore tracks fill the album and bring back the typical Ryker's spirit. That the band has still a very solid status in the hardcore scene shows already the fact of a guest appearences like the one of Craig Ahead (Sick Of It All) on the mighty "High Five in Your Face With a Chair".

Furthermore the new album covers all the trademarks of this iconic non-US hardcore band. The five-piece builds in heavy riffs in their songs ("The Tenth Level") which reflects the metal side of Ryker's. Songs like "Pig Justice" have the hardcore groove while "The Downfall" brings an extensive mosh part. And "The Outcast's Voice" reminded me in the end even a bit to the old Spermbirds songs.

"Cowboy Song" is a surprisingly quiet song when it comes to Ryker's. It sounds almost like a Faith No More number and it feels like the silence after the storm. A cool closer of a great new release.

"Never Meant to Last" misses a real outstanding smasher like "Hunting season" but there is enough great stuff on this longplayer that is more than a compensation. Ryker's are back and I hope they came to stay.

CD review SICK OF IT ALL "Last act of defiance"

Veröffentlicht am 2. Oktober 2014 von Markus W. in Sick Of It All, Hardcore, Punk, Punkrock, CD Review, News, Wisdom In Chains

(8/10) Talking about Sick Of It All means having it over 28 years of hardcore on a very high level. Already this fact is very remarkabale. It becomes even more outstanding while thinking about the fact that the band from New York never had a real dip.

The hardcore quartet kept the enegry level over all those years and still spreads this rebellious spirit that makes them so authentic.

"Last act of defiance" shows again, that the band didn't get tired. They burned 14 new tracks on the album and non of them is a weak one. All of them are standing strong as a rock. And all of them have an irresistable groove that just forces you to move. You can stand still while listening to their music. A good example herefore is "Get Bronx" with the mosh elements.

The album has also the more punky momnets like the fast "Outgunner" and "Beltway getaway" - both anthems that can lead to great moments for the coming live shows. "DNC" is another song in this category. Melody, riff and vocallines just blows you off your feet.

Another hardcore anthem that is worth to be mentioned is "2061" with an pounding bassline and hammering drums. Sick Of It All got also support from a guest on one of the tracks. It is Mad Joe Black from Wisdom In Chain that is joining in on "Facing the abyss"

On top of all that the album got an excellent production. Tue Madsen did a very good job and gave the hardcore legend a tight and electrifying sound that just fits.

Sick Of It All proves again that hardcore can be very diversified without denying the roots. An album that shows a very experienced band that kept the spirit of their youth and combined it with mature dedication. Thumbs up.
