THE PINEAPPLE THIEF announces live release

The Pineapple Thief recorded the final show of their “Your Wilderness” tour at the sold-out Islington Assembly Hall in London.

This concert film "Where We Stood" will be released on September 8th via Kscope

Bruce Soord says about the show and releaseIt was our last show of the tour and our biggest headline show ever. We had 15 cameras, a massive jib, but more importantly - a sell-out crowd!  The pressure was indeed on, but it’s safe to say that the stars aligned for us that night and it turned out to be one of the ost memorable performances of our career so far.

We've thrown everything but the kitchen sink at this special edition blu-ray.  It has the full show; documentary footage and interviews; and 2 different 5.1 surround mixes (one natural, one discrete) - all in high resolution 24/96 stereo.  It also has our last album 'Your Wilderness' in stereo and surround, plus the special '8 Years Later' album in stereo with a brand-new surround mix too.  All of that plus 5 acoustic tracks (also stereo and surround) and loads of bonus videos. This is without doubt the definitive 'Your Wilderness' release.”

CD review UNISONIC "Live in Wacken"

(8/10) earMusic releases end of June a Hansen & Friends live album (see review), recorded 2016 at the famous Wacken festival.T he guys played a 75 minutes set with Unisonic folowing them on the same stage one hour later. This meant two shifts for Kai Hansen and also singer Michael Kiske had a double appearance with doing some songs together with Hansen & Friends before running through a 75 minutes setlist with the fellow Unisonic band mates (Hansen, Meyer, Ward and Zafiriou). And since the recording equipment was in place anyhow, why not also capturing this concert? A word a blow.

"Live in Wacken" will be Unisonic's first live album with setlist that focussed on the two studio releases and the first EP (what else). Little highlights though, as with Hansen & Friends before, were the Helloween songs that have been played by Unisonic. "A Little Time" and "March of Time" were special moments, very much welcomed by the Wacken crowd. These too tracks, but also Unisonic hits like "King for a Day" and "Unisonic" have been the final adrenaline injection, closing of a long day of metal in Northern Germany.

In retrospect the shows from Hansen & friends and Unisonic almost feels like a warm-up for Pumpkins United even though the entire Helloween crew wasn't involved in 2016. However it felt like one additional step towards something that will bring real German metal from the eighties back on stage in autumn 2017.

CD review BLIND GUARDIAN "Live Beyond the Spheres"

CD review BLIND GUARDIAN "Live Beyond the Spheres"

(9/10) To introduce Blind Guardian is like carrying sand to the beach. The German four-piece band is well known all over the world with extremely successful songs and longplayers. Ten studio albums are part of the band’s track record and also live albums have been released, capturing the fantastic vibe and sphere of a Blind Guardian show.

As we speak the next live release will hit the shelves. “Live Beyond the Spheres” is the fourth live album (not counting the video release from 2004) and I think that it fully lives up to expectation. In total 22 songs are a delight for each fan of this iconic band, enjoying with more than 2 hours of excellent metal music that combines musical finesse and energetic metal to a greater total.

I have to admit that I’m very much into the early Blind Guardian days. “Battalion of Fear”, the band’s debut, was and is an excellent metal album that paved the way for Blind Guardians success. It was the first countable step on a journey that finds another climax with this new live album. As being a fan from the beginning I was very happy to see classics like “Majesty”, “Valhalla” and “Banish from Sanctuary” on the tracklist of this 3 CD package. These songs stand for a time when Blind Guardian was more perceived as a speed metal band. Overtime the quartet developed their sound by adding various layers to their music. Never losing the roots and foundation of the typical Blind Guardian sound, the band became more progressive with adding various structures to their songs. Blind Guardian is one of these bands that found the right formula for merging complexity, melody and heaviness to something unique, a trademark that makes the guys from Krefeld very recognizable up to date.

I run off the track a bit, so, back to this release. “Live Beyond the Spheres” offers a well-chosen overview of the bands musical achievement. I mentioned the older songs already but there’s also more than enough material on the album that will be loved by fans that ‘discovered’ the band more recently. Regardless if it’s “Fly”, “Twilight of the Gods” or “The Ninth Wave”, each of these newer songs fits perfectly together with the older material, leading to a comprehensive Blind Guardian experience for fans and rookies.

It goes without saying the sound and production of this live release is done in a perfect fashion, connecting 22 songs that have been recorded at various shows of the 2015 tour. Choosing such an approach includes the risk of scattered live compilation – not in this case. “Live Beyond the Spheres” stand as a rock and will be a joyful experience for every metal passionistas.

CD review KISSIN' DYNAMITE “Goodbye Generation – Dynamite Nights”

CD review KISSIN' DYNAMITE “Goodbye Generation – Dynamite Nights”

(8/10) Not only that the summer period is the time of the year that’s filled with festivals and open airs, it also feels like quite some bands releasing live albums as we speak.

Swabian power outfit Kissin’ Dynamite is one of them, having their first live album in the starting blocks. The Youngsters, even though they are in the meantime in their mid 20’s, can look back on a longer history in metal. These guys started as kids and I guess that nobody could see the rise of Kissin’ Dynamite, maybe with one exception. German metal dinosaur Udo Dirkschneider supported the band already at an early stage, what at least brought a bit more media attention to their first records than usual.

Kissin’ Dynamite is around since ten years and what’s more logical than celebrating this anniversary with a live show, preferably in a home game environment. This show took place beginning of December last year when the quintet played a show at the sold-out LKA Longhorn in Stuttgart. It goes without saying that this gig became a euphoric metal show with fans getting wild and crazy. Playing this concert was more a metal party than just a show – a real anniversary party.

Kissin’ Dynamite can draw on a rich amount of songs, being released on five longplayers and spread out over the last decade. The setlist covered all these phases with the unfortunate fact that the focus was on the latest longplayers. Not that these records contain bad songs. “Hashtag Your Life” and “She’s a Killer’ are well-crafted melodic metal songs that were celebrated by an excited crowd. However, for me the first two longplayers feature the best stuff the band wrote and fortunately at least Priest-inspired metal hymns like “Made in Swabia” made it one the setlist.

All in all we can conclude that “Goodbye Generation – Dynamite Nights” is a good live album (also be released as DVD/BluRay) showcasing a young and hungry band with fans sharing the same passion. It also comes with an excellent sound and the fact that you get 25 songs means quantity and quality - all in one.

"Stuttgart. Es war ein wunderschöner Abend..."

CD review HANSEN & FRIENDS :Thank You Wacken (Live)"

CD review HANSEN & FRIENDS :Thank You Wacken (Live)"

(8/10) Kai Hansen and Wacken share a longtime common history. It was back in 1994 when Hansen played the Wacken open ait festival with Gamma Ray. At that time the festival was far away from being as big as it is these days - it was a smaller event in a city that was not known by anybody outside the village borders. Things changed over time, for Wacken and Kai Hansen.

Gamma Ray is still the main focus point of the iconic guitarist from Hamburg, but he also signed responsible for a massive contribution to Unisonic as well as he released in 2016 a solo album called "XXX - Three Decades in Metal". Hansen brought together a few friends around the table, celebrating pure metal with a bunch of songs reflecting a wide variety of rock and metal sounds.

A logical consequence out of Hansen's Wacken-connection and the solo project led to a unique metal show on a muddy summer night in 2016 when the studio album of Hansen & Friends became alive, on stage. Supported by musicians like Eike Freesen, Alex Dietz, Frank Beck, and more, Hansen & Friends performed a set that was build on the solo release from a few months earlier.

The cherry on this metal cake was the inclusion of some older Helloween classics which made a great show to an even greater one. Not only that tunes like "Victim of Fate", " Want Out" and "Future World' belong to the best German metal ever brought up to surface, it was the last two mentioned that brought also legendary Michael Kiske on stage. Hearing him singing these classics with Hansen on lead guitar gave a first glimpse of what fans can expect in autumn this year when the guys will be part of the 'Pumpkins United" tour.

This live release is an album that you should call your own when interested in well-executed melodic metal. Good stuff.

Live report SÓLSTAFIR / GOLD, De Helling, Utrecht, 17.06.2017

Veröffentlicht am 18. Juni 2017 von Markus W. in Sólstafir, Gold, Live, Live Review, Post Rock, Prog Metal, Black Metal, Alternative Metal, De Helling, Season Of Mist, Epic Metal, Iceland

Was it the Icelandic football team last year gaining many people's sympathy by their unusual and straightforward team approach, it is Icelandic rock music that adds quality to this years summer. Sólstafir recently released their new album "Berdreyminn" which stands for another cornerstone in post rock, coming with a deepened intensity you can't escape from. The quartet is on tour in June this year playing some of the bigger festivals plus a few club shows. One of the latter took place in De Helling, Utrecht on a hot and sunny June night and it felt like the Icelanders bringing a fresh breeze to Holland, even though the temperature in the venue also reached sauna level rather quickly.

Rotterdam-based alternative metal outfit Gold kicked off this event, as they also did a couple of days earlier in Breda. The sextet entered the stage for their home-game show and instead of starting directly into their set, everybody stood still, listening to a two minutes intro from tape. This was an unusual beginning since you could assume that you want to use every minute of a support slot for playing your songs. These came to surface after the prelude faded away in the room. A guitar riff broke the silence, making some girls jump in the front row. Gold played a 45 minutes set of post-rock songs. The base for Gold’s music are heavy riffs and a grooving rhythm section. Three guitars enabled the band to create a massive wall of sound with almost everybody on stage headbanging throughout the entire set. These guys are really committed to what they are doing. A counter part to this robust riff orgy was the expressional 'dance' of singer Milena. Almost esoteric moves have been out of context, not really getting in line with the rest of the massive performance. The same goes also for the hypnotic vocal lines with a melancholic Weltschmerz embedded that started to get annoying the further the set went on. This was my perception but I also have to say that I heard quite some people being impressed by the show. At the end I must say that the guys know and love what they are doing and if you like it or not stays on an individual level. However, it would be good to let lose of the cookie cutter approach and add more twists to the songs. This could make things far more exciting.

Live report SÓLSTAFIR / GOLD, De Helling, Utrecht, 17.06.2017

After a warm applause slowly disappeared, followed by a quick re-arrangement of the scenery, it was shooting stars Sólstafir who started a 100 minutes journey through post rock in an Icelandic ambience. The latest records of the quartet have jaw-dropping good ones, showcasing a band that combines emotional depth with mighty rock and metal sounds. These songs include everything, from vulnerable moments to heavy riff infernos. All this together lead to a spectacular show that didn't use any gimmicks or effects. The music, together with a simple but effective light show, was enough to make this performance to one of the best ones I have seen this year.

Sólstafir fans witnessed a show that was built on a well-chosen setlist, covering mainly songs from the last two albums, enriched by classic like "Goddess of the Age". The ten minutes masterpiece was the phenomenal closer, introduced as the last song, but fortunately a very long one. Sólstafir hit bulls-eye that night. Their songs are magic and so is their show.

One thing was annoying though and it has nothing to do with the band(s). For me it's still not understandable why people constantly have to talk during a concert. If you want to chat with your friends, fine - do this at the bar. Especially during the calmer parts of Sólstafir's set, these chatterboxes have been a real distraction, leading to a moment when frontman Aðalbjörn Tryggvason introduced the sad background of "Necrologue" with people in the crowd still keeping on talking. Fortunately, as a matter of heart, he clearly states that these people should shut-up now, an announcement that was very much welcomed by the real fans. Later on it was the sound engineer who did the same to some other 'fans' and hopefully people understand that a concert is about music and no communication platform or chat room.

Anyhow, with these short moments a distraction it was an awesome Sólstafir show. These four guys are perfectionistas being capable to transfer the entire finesse of their records live on stage. Sólstafir gigs are emotional, heavy, mighty, fragile, powerful, refreshing, melancholic and hopeful. The quartet uses the entire spectrum of sounds, giving you the shivers - Icelandic magic that splashes over to the European mainland. I'm looking already forward to see the guys again. Horns up.

CD review ATLANTEAN KODEX " The Annihilation of Bavaria"

Veröffentlicht am 18. Juni 2017 von Markus W. in Atlantean Kodex, Van Records, News, Live, CD Review, Epic Metal, Power Metal, Heavy Metal

CD review ATLANTEAN KODEX " The Annihilation of Bavaria"

(8/10) Atlantean Kodex belongs to the group of younger bands that brought epic metal back to peoples attentions. Together with While Heaven Swept, Sorcerer and other, it's the Bavarian five -piece that blows some new life into a genre that had a first peak with bands like Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol. For whatever reason, this sub-genre never really left the underground - for the good and the bad. One the benefits is for sure the fact that epic metal always stayed authentic and real. Playing this kind of music demands dedication with Atlantean Kodex being a band having this enthusiasm for what they're doing as part of their musical DNA.

After having published two studio records it's the current release that marks the band’s third live album. After having unveiled “The Annihilation of Koenigshofen” and “The Annihilation of Nurnberg”, it this time “The Annihilation of Bavaria” that premiers footage of one of their concerts as part of the package.

It was back in the cold snd grey month of November in 2015 when Atlantean Kodex played a legendary show at Castle Theuern in Bavaria. The show was a celebration of their 10th anniversary and exclusively included a performance of the entire "The White Goddess" album. Base for this review is the audio version which means that I can't tell you a lot about the probably thrilling visuals of the show.

Anyhow, already the live album itself is worth to be checked out. Atlantean Kodex performs tight and powerful in front of an enthusiastic crowd. It's a typical home game atmosphere that pushes the band to their best level of performance. And since it was Atlantean Kodex only concert in 2015, fans and bands have being hungry for live performed Atlantean Kodex-metal.

The sound, as a crucial element of a live album, is good, supporting the underground vibe. Things are not overdone with this release. Like described earlier, also the sound stays true and real. It's a basic but powerful production which gives you as the listener the feeling of standing right in the venue.

Atlantean Kodex is belonging the group of contemporary epic metal bands and their live album underlines this in an impressive manner.

5FDP to finish end of current european run with Tommy Vext of BAD WOLVES on vocals

5FDP to finish end of current european run with Tommy Vext of BAD WOLVES on vocals

Five Finger Death Punch announced that they will finish out their remaining European dates with Bad Wolves vocalist Tommy Vext filling in for Five Finger Death Punch frontman Ivan Moody, whose struggles with substance abuse are widely known.

Ivan Moody, vocalist of Five Finger Death Punch said: “I am embarrassed and ashamed to admit that I have fallen off the wagon again.  I was on shaky ground prior to our performance in Tilburg, and although a lot of the events of that show were out of my control, the shame of not delivering pushed me over the edge.  It would not be fair to my bandmates or my fans to continue to perform in my current condition.  One of the worst parts of addiction is the loneliness you feel, so having the support of my band and all the knuckleheads is what drives me.  I am committed to getting better so I can get back out on stage as soon as possible.”

Zoltan Bathory, guitarist of Five Finger Death Punch said: “As a band, we are committed to supporting Ivan's road to recovery.  We are as baffled and saddened as anyone to watch our brother continue to struggle.  Almost everyone in the world knows someone who struggles with addiction, and can relate to how the self-destruction of someone they care about is very difficult to watch.  Five Finger Death Punch has every intention of playing the dates we’re committed to and beyond.  The band is bigger than any one member.”

Tommy Vext, the vocalist of up and coming metal band Bad Wolves said: “It is a tremendous honor to share the stage with Five Finger Death Punch on these remaining dates.  Today I am blessed with over 8 years of sobriety, so I can certainly empathize with Ivan’s struggles.  Not only do I feel a responsibility to deliver for the fans of Five Finger Death Punch on these remaining dates, but also to deliver for Ivan so he can get back to work as soon as he is healthy.”

Five Finger Death Punch thanks its fans for their continued support.

CD review PRIMAL FEAR "Angels of Mercy - Live in Germany"

(8/10) German power metal outfit Primal Fear belongs to the Champions League of European metal. It was in the beginning of 12016 when the quintet released their latest strike "Rulebreaker" which was followed by an extensive tour through Europe before embarking to oversea shows in North America, Japan and Australia. One of the shows on this tour was a homegame for Primal Fear, playing a concert in Stuttgart. Primal Fear recorded this show for CD and BluRay/DVD. Base for this review is the audio version. This release is a premier for this German powerhouse since the band never released a live BluRay/DVD earlier in time. Already from this point of view it's a treat for fans who waited for so many years for getting a Primal Fear show right into their living room.

What else to report when it comes to "Angels of Mercy - Live in Germany". The setlist is an excellent choice, including the best Primal Fear's long history in metal with a focus on the new material, captured on an album with a sound that is powerful, authentic and real. Last but not least fans have been loud and enthusiastic as it should be at a homegame.

All in all the metal world can welcome another Primal Fear live album and a DVD as a premier in the band's discography. Good stuff to turn your home into a heavy metal madhouse.
