CD review ANTHRAX "Kings Among Scotland"

CD review ANTHRAX "Kings Among Scotland"

(*/10) East-Coast thrash pioneers Anthrax played a show at Barrowland Blallroom in Glasgow, Scotland on February 15th, 2017. The show was part of the band’s “Among the Kings”-tour and was built very much around the legendary “Among the Living” album which was performed in its entirety.

The show was filmed and recorded, leading to this new Anthrax release entitled “Kings Among Scotland” of which the CD version is the base for this review. Next to the CD version the release will be available in other formats too, like DVD and BluRay, which gives you an additional visual impression of this intense metal show.

Listening to this live release feels like a journey back in time. Next to the brilliant “Among the Living” album also other highlights from the past found a way on the setlist of this show. Songs like the opener “A.I.R” and “Medusa” are still timeless classics in thrash metal that secure together with new material (“Breathing Lightning” and “Evil Twins”) a seamless thrash metal experience for fans of excellent metal music. This isn’t a coincidence knowing that fans voted on pre-show.

“Kings Among Scotland” is a live album that captures the energy of an Anthrax show in a really good fashion. This five-piece band from NYC belongs to the spearhead of thrash metal and releases, like the current one, shows that these five guys still have a huge appetite for metal and that’s what this live album states in a perfect fashion.

  1. A.I.R.
  2. Madhouse
  3. Evil Twin
  4. Medusa

  6. Fight ‘Em Til You Can’t

CD review DOKKEN "Return to the East - Live"

CD review DOKKEN "Return to the East - Live"

(*/10) If you didn’t live under a rock for the last 30 years, Dokken is a band you at least heard of. Don Dokken, George Lynch and Co. were extremely successful during the 80’s. Records such as “Under Lock and Key” and “Tooth and Nail” belong to the finest hour of melodic metal and it was the contribution of the title track to the “Nightmare at Elm Street 3 – Dream Warriors” movie that marked the all-time high of this legendary band from California.

Unfortunately success couldn’t be maintained, mainly due to conflicts and different opinions and different musical directions. Line-up changes followed, band members started new project/bands and some comebacks have been tried out too, with the latter never getting close to the magic moments of the mid 80’s.

What was as remarkable as unexpected was a show Dokken performed in the original line-up at the 2016 edition of Loud Park Festival in Japan. Don Dokken, George Lynch, Jeff Pilson, and Mick Brown played an entire show that night and captured the moment on CD and DVD.

The current live album reminds of Dokken’s first live album “Beast in the East” which was recorded in Japan too. Even though the setlist slightly differs it’s classics like “Unchain the Night”, "When Heaven Comes Down” and “In My Dreams” that built the core of the show. This live album is a nostalgic one that brings back the good vibes from thirty years ago with a Don Dokken sounding much better than what fans partly got hear over the last years - even though the old days are gone.

To spice things up the album also includes with “It’s Another Day” a new studio track that quite OK without having a big real wow-effected. “Heaven Sent” and “Will the Sun Rise” complete the release, both being done in an acoustic version.

“Return to the East – Live” became a good live album with songs that are milestones in melodic metal. However, I still prefer the first four studio albums and the “Beast in the East” live release.

  1. It’s Another Day (New Studio Track)
  2. Kiss Of Death
  3. The Hunter
  4. Unchain The Night
  5. When Heaven Comes Down
  6. Breakin’ The Chains
  7. Into The Fire
  8. Dream Warriors
  9. Tooth And Nail
  10. Alone Again (Intro)
  11. Alone Again
  12. It’s Not Love
  13. In My Dreams
  14. Heaven Sent (Acoustic Studio Bonus Track)
  15. Will The Sun Rise (Acoustic Studio Bonus Track)

HAKEN will release their 1st live album in June

HAKEN will release their 1st live album in June

HAKEN are extremely pleased to announce the release of their first ever live album, titled ‘L-1VE’ and scheduled for release on the 22nd June 2018. Following the release of the bands much-acclaimed fourth studio album ‘Affinity’, they embarked upon their 10th anniversary tour across Europe & North America. Recorded and filmed on the 13th April 2017, at the legendary Melkweg venue on the Amsterdam stop of that tour, this represents the band’s first ever live document with tracks from across the bands discography.

“The release of official live material is a project that is long overdue and we know our existing fans have been crying out for this for some time now. Whilst we have filmed and recorded many shows in the past we have always felt there were elements of our shows that could be improved 'visually' before we documented and immortalised this for the world to see and that the timing for a live release never felt right for us. This is just our nature as creative people to be so extremely self-critical and constantly strive for perfection. It is largely due to the will of the people that the idea of this project became a reality. Both the band and the label were inundated with emails requesting a live release in some shape or form, and it was actually rather flattering, so giving the people what they wanted just felt like the right thing to do.”

‘L-1VE’ will be released as a 2CD/2DVD Digipak package & as digital download. The DVD will include 4 bonus tracks filmed at ProgPower USA 2016 that also includes Mike Portnoy’s cameo appearance on gong, as well as all of the official videos from the ‘Affinity’ album. The main show and the bonus material on the DVD are also mixed in 5.1 surround sound.

CD review L.A. GUNS "Made in Milan"

(*/10) The yearly Frontiers Rock festival in Milan is a good moment in time to see bigger parts of Frontiers Music's portfolio live on stage and it's a happening that's highly entertaining for fans of hardrock, AOR and melodic metal. Additionally it offers a great opportunity for the label to record shows with the aim of releasing live albums throughout the upcoming twelve months.

Some of these live albums are already unveiled and the next one lines-up. Hardrock powerhouse L.A. Guns played a show at last years Frontiers Rock festival as a part of their 'Reloaded Tour 2017' and the show is now available on CD and DVD/BluRay.

The band played an oldschool set in Milan with a focus on the the debut and "Cocked & Loaded". Songs of these two longplayers built the base on the setlist of a concert that covered all periods of Tracii Guns and Co..

Furthermore the album comes with a proper production and doesn't sound over-produced. In the end there is nothing wrong with this live album but it's also nothing you must have. "Made in Milan" offers a solid overview of L.A. Guns creative work in a live setup - not more and not less.

  1. No Mercy
  2. Electric Gypsy
  3. Killing Machine
  4. Bow Solo/Over The Edge
  5. Sex Action

  9. Don’t Look At Me That Way
  10. Malaria
  11. Never Enough

CD review AYREON "Ayreon Universe - Live"

CD review AYREON "Ayreon Universe - Live"

(10/10) There are musicians were you wish their music would be as big their ego and you have musical passionistas like Arjen Lucassen, iconic composers that got the gift of an endless flow of creativity combined with musical skills to realize these ideas and dreams. The Dutch guitarist has been part of so many bands and projects that it's hard to keep track of all of them. Things started with Bodine, a band from Den Haag, before the first international success came with hardrock outfit Vengeance. Especially "Arabia" included already some multilayered sounds and more complexity than what fans got to hear with the predecessor "Take It or Leave It".

After having left Vengeance the 2m tall guitarist had several projects in the starting blocks of which Star One and Ayreon are the most important ones. Ayreon debut in 1995 with "The Final Experiment", with eight additional longplayers that followed. "The Source" was the latest studio album to date, a record that saw the light of day in 2017. Even though the band released excellent longplayers it stayed a studio project, mainly due to huge number of guest musicians that have been involved in the various productions and the complexity of bringing such an awesome group of people together on stage.

2015 was a kind of turning point when it comes to live ambitions for Ayreon. "The Human Equation" got a live production, leading to four shows at Nieuwe Luxor Theater in Rotterdam. One of these shows has been recorded and the release of a live DVD/CD some months later gave all Ayreon fans a chance to be part of this unique moment. It feels like these shows acted as a trigger for more. Fans were highly enthusiastic and the four Rotterdam shows have been the kick-start for the Dutch guitarist to go even bolder when it comes to live ambitions.

Lucassen planned to do one show at 013 in Tilburg under the banner of "Ayreon Universe", this time, in contrary to "The Theater Equation", arranged by Lucassen himself in cooperation with Joost van den Broek. Ayreonauts all over the world got extremely excited by this news and it was pretty soon obvious that one show would not do the job. Two more concerts have been added, all being sold out in no time too and even a try-out show in a smaller set-up got the 'sold-out' sign very quickly.

Fortunately for all the lucky ones who witnessed this unique moment in rock as well as for all the other fans of Lucassen's excellent music this special event was captured on film and tape. It will be end of March this year when Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group brings this show right into peoples living room in various formats.

In total 16 original singers (list se below) have been involved during these three shows in April 2017, performing 28 songs from Ayreon (plus two from Star One) which led to more than two hours of exciting rock and metal, performed to perfection.

Songs played that night captured the entire Ayreon journey in rock. The debut "The Final Experience" was present with three songs, all in the first half of the show, and also latest highlights ("Everybody Dies" and "Star of Sirrah") from "The Source" have been performed. The main focus though was on the 2008 record "01011001" and "The Theory of Everything" from 2013. Five songs each made it on the impressive setlist while it was the Star One classic "The Eye of Ra" rounded of a terrific night.

Arjen Lucassen succeeded with 100% when it comes to his ambition of creating a special evening of music. Passion and a strong willpower were the key to mount such a brilliant production. "Ayreon Universe" lifts the bar when it comes to concerts and live recordings. To coordinate so many musicians, on stage and from a production perspective, is an enormous effort. Everybody involved in this concert experience - musicians and fans, cherished all the hard work. It was a unique moment, a once-in-a-lifetime event, that every fans of rock & metal music should have been seen and listened to. This live release is big and needs to have a pole position in every serious collection of rock.

British rock pioneers Magnum are a regular guest on Markus' Heavy Music Blog. Several CD reviews have been posted as well as some live reports of which the latest one dates back to May 2016 when the legendary band played a show at Waterfront in Norwich, England.
Almost to date two years later Magnum hit the road again, starting in Bristol, UK. After having toured on the island, Magnum crossed over to the mainland for many more shows. The first stop was in Leiden and it was the first time that Bob Catley, Tony Clarkin and Co. played the Gebr. de Nobel.
Talking about the line-up, there has been some changes compared with two years ago. Drummer Harry James isn't on board anymore and the same goes for Mark Stanway who left Magnum in 2016. Rick Benton and Lee Morris filled the gap, both having been part of Magnum's latest epos "Lost on the Road to Eternity".
As it was in 2016 in Zoetermeer, NL also this time Magnum kicked-off the evening directly without having an opening act with them. "When We Were Younger" was the first song on the setlist and referred back to the "Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow" album from 2007 while the main contribution to the setlist came from the latest exquisite longplayer "Lost on the Road to Eternity" of which four songs have been played.
The great thing with Magnum, as it was also with Saxon a few days ago, is the fact that old and new songs build a seamless concert experience. Each of the tunes, regardless of which era of the band, is equally good. There is no 'we have to get through the new songs before enjoying the old classics'. Each of the sixteen songs played that night was a gift for fans that found their way to Gebr. de Nobel.
No doubt, classics like "Les Morts Dasant" and "On a Storytellers Night" are a 'must' and fans can't get enough of it. Also „All England’s Eye“ was highly appreciated. However, there are new tracks that have the potential for reaching an equal status over time. "Peaches and Cream" from the latest album and also "Crazy Old Mothers" are brilliant melodic rockers that shine on a studio record as bright as during a live show. To see Magnum on stage is always a great experience that you shouldn't miss while being a fan of melodic hardrock that comes with big melodies and Clarkin's rocking guitar.
Time was flying that night and far to early the first notes of "When the World Comes Down" filled the room. The song, taken from the "Vigilante" album, was a well-chosen closer, rounding of another Magnum concert with hopefully many more to come.
By the way, the band is still on tour and you can find the dates further down below of this live report.

DYNAMO OPEN AIR announces live releases of PANTERA and SOULFLYDYNAMO OPEN AIR announces live releases of PANTERA and SOULFLY

From the mid-80s until last decade, DYNAMO OPEN AIR in Eindhoven, Netherlands was an iconic metal festival and the go-to-place for metal maniacs from all Europe.

It all started in 1981, when André Verhuysen and a friend opened their Hard Rock Café (not the world-spanning franchise you might think of) within the Dynamo Youth Centre in Eindhoven, the Netherlands and before the year was over, the small group of enthusiasts booked RAVEN, the first ever band to play the venue, who turned in a killer performance for 300 ecstatic fans in a sold-out show.

As the time went on, live acts became the norm and in 1986, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of what by then had become hot under the name Dynamo Rock Club, André launched the first ever DYNAMO OPEN AIR on the car parking lot outside of the club. Bands such as SATAN, ANGEL WITCH and ONSLAUGHT played to an audience estimated at 5.000.

In 1994, DYNAMO OPEN AIR entered the Dutch record books by achieving the largest and longest lasting traffic jam in the history of the Netherlands. At the same time, with a massive 70.000 attendees, it became the largest metal gathering of its time in Europe, possibly in the world! No wonder with acts such as DANZIG, GOREFEST, CLAWFINGER, LIFE OF AGONY, PRONG, SICK OF IT ALL or KYUSS on board. However, that figure got put to shame one year later, counting up to 110.000 metal heads in ‘95.

Trying to find a suitable home for the ever growing festival, DYNAMO OPEN AIR moved its location several times. In 2005 it took place for the last time, featuring top-acts such as TESTAMENT, OBITUARY, TRIVIUM and ANTHRAX. Through the course of its impressive twenty year lifespan, mega-acts such as METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, PANTERA, MARILYN MANSON, SEPULTURA, MONSTER MAGNET, MACHINE HEAD, BIOHAZARD and many more entered the DYNAMO stages and helped make it one of if not the most influential metal festivals throughout Europe.

Now, 13 years after the festival’s last run and with the help of Caroline/Universal, Dynamo Concerts opens the secret archives of live recordings and starts releasing the legendary concerts for the first time on CD and vinyl as well as digitally, and selected titles on DVD. With more than 300 recorded shows to review and process, it’s an undertaking that will easily stretch over the next couple of years. In many cases, these remastered, unique and previously unreleased or even unheard recordings will be the perfect vehicle to travel back in time and witness first hand, how bands that became superstars later gave their debut performance for a European crowd. Metal history channel galore!

The first two releases, live performances of PANTERA and SOULFLY from 1998, will be available on JUNE 22nd, 2018.
