(7/10) Relapse Records has a split release in the pipeline that sees the light of day beginning of March. Crossover thrashers Iron Reagan share an album with death metal powerhouse Gatecreeper. The latter added three songs to the total while Iron Reagan is present with five new tracks.

Things start with Iron Reagan, honoring again the glorious days of crossover thrash, times when bands like Nuclear Assault and D.R.I. had their peak moments. The quintet didn’t accept any compromises in the past and also the new songs follow this merciless approach. Iron Reagan is pushing the pedal to the metal which ends up in extremely speedy smashers such as „Warning“ or the 43 seconds blast „Proudly Unaccountable“. The only moment of moderate pace is „Take the Fall". Not that it's of extremely different tempo but it’s build on a slightly slower pace which brings a great groove more to forefront. Not a too bad thing, I must say.

After such a speed attack, Iron Reagan hand over to Gatecreeper. All of a sudden you're confronted by a totally different sound construct and thankfully there is an intro entitled „Daybreak" that prepares you for a death metal ride. Gatecreeper is specialized for oldschool death metal that reminds of bands like Obituary. It’s not that you’re paralyzed by new things after you listened to „Dead Inside“ and „War Has Begun“. Gatecreeper’s mission isn’t to redefine death metal. They build their songs on roots that lead back to Tampa in the eighties. However, what Gatecreeper brings to the table is still great music and listening to the songs is a pleasure without any suffering.

This split CD is a good way of checking out two bands of Relapse Records rich portfolio of metal outfits that you maybe would have missed otherwise.

CD review IRON REAGAN "Crossover Ministry"

Veröffentlicht am 19. Januar 2017 von Markus W. in Iron Reagan, Relapse Records, Hardcore, Punk, News

(8/10) This band is no stranger. Iron Reagan began as a side project by members of bands like Municipal Waste and Darkest Hour. "Worse Than Dead" was the debut of this new project. One year later, in 2014, the sophomore "The Tyranny of Will" was welcomed by metalheads all over the planet, now followed by the third longplayer.

In the tradition of the earlier releases Iron Reagan continues with their hardcore thrash metal melting pot leading to songs that are short and spot on. 18 tracks in not even 30 minutes are a clear statement. "Crossover Ministry" is a furious piece of music that's a pleasure for fans of bands like Suicidal Tendencies up to Nuclear Assault and the early Anthrax.

"Megachurch" for example includes phrasing that sounds very much like Suicidal-frontman Mike Muir, including some typical hardcore screams as a counterpart - a cool tune and a pleasure for each listener.

This album feels like an express train with forgotten breaks. Iron Reagan rushes through the eighteen songs as if there would be no tomorrow. This longplayer doesn't give you a chance to take a breath. Piano-parts, like in the beginning of "Dead With My Friends" are an exception. After a few seconds a grooving riff starts the actual song that builds up to another high speed hardcore thrasher.

Also having a look into the lyrics shows typical themes of crossover. Iron Reagan thematizes topics about the current state of the world ("A Dying World") up to trouble with the neighborhood ("Fuck the Neighbors").

Iron Reagan celebrates good old crossover, merging hardcore and thrash metal into a brutal release that's like a musical smash into your face.

CD review IRON REAGAN "Tyranny of will"

Veröffentlicht am 7. September 2014 von Markus W. in Iron Reagan, DRI, MOD, Hardcore, Thrash Metal, Crossover, CD Review, News

(8/10) Here comes the new strike by Iron Reagan. Started in 2012 the trip of the Richmond, Virginia based five-piece band continues. Iron Reagan is a side project of Municipal Waste members. It's Landphil Hall on guitar and Tony Foresta (v) from the thrash band and the line-up is completed by Rob Skotis (b), Ryan Parrish (d) and Mark Bronzino (g).

The project released already one full length album in 2013 which got the name "Worse than dead" followed by their newst record "The tyranny of will".

The music of the band reflects the older crossover heroes from Gang Green and D.R.I up to Nuclear Assault. At least those are the bands which popped up in my mind when I heard "Tyranny of will" the first time. It's the mix between thrash like from Municipal Waste, hardcore and some punk elements. The whole package isn't very new, but it feels good to hear this kind of music again.

The title track "Tyranny of will" opens up the album, followed by typical crossover anthems like "I won't go" and "Eyeball gore". This is a starting triple which revitalises the old crossover days. The shortest song has just 14 seconds and is called "Your kid's an asshole" followed by the 21 seconds track "Patriotic shock". The tunes are right to the point. No decoration - just raw unleashed power.

All songs aren't longer than 2 minutes and something. All the songs? No wrong. The bouncer "Four more years" has with 4 minutes an almost epical length. It's a heavy groover which rounds of "Tyranny of will". But the strength of the album is when it's fast and compromisless.

If Municipal Waste is the rebirth of 80's thrash metal, than Iron Reagan is the pendant for crossover fans. If D.R.I., M.O.D. and Gang Green are your favorites you should check out "Tyranny of will".
