CD review DEATH "Scream Bloody Gore" (Reissue)

Veröffentlicht am 13. Mai 2016 von Markus W. in Death, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, News, CD Review

(9/10) To review Death's milestone "Scream Bloody Gore" is like carrying sand to the beach. It's the debut of Chuck Schuldiner's legendary band, an album that was released in 1987 with a sound that was ground breaking. "Scream Bloody Gore" marked the beginning of a new era of death metal. Schuldiner combined, like almost nobody else, the brutality of death metal with a filigrane guitar play that showed so many nuances.

I can remember the time when the album was released. We have been a bunch of young metalheads and what we heard was something that blew us away. This was the hardest stuff we have heard up till then and we have been fascinated and confused, all in one.

This was 30 years ago and I'm happy that Relapse Records salutes those Death classics with re-releasing them in a remastered version. Records like "Leprosy" and "Spiritual Healing" have been published already, now followed by the debut. Like said earlier, I don't think that I have to go deeper into talking about the album. The status of the longplayer speaks for itself and you should just enjoy this death metal feast.

What's interesting is the stuff on CD 2. This is the true treasure box for Death fans. This disc includes recordings from the rehearsals as well as songs from the Florida session, all of them unreleased. Of course, the sound isn't that much standing out, but in this case it doesn't matter, since it doesn't count. It's more the unique view behind the curtain of one of the most influencial metal bands. By listening to each of the reissues it becomes very obvious how big the loss of bandleader Chuck Schuldiner was and still is. This man was a musical genius and the fact that we are still talking about him and his music, 15 years after he passed away far too early, that says it all.

"Scream Bloody Gore" opened a brand new chapter of metal and even if you're not a death metal fan, you should have this album. "Scream Bloddy Gore" is cult, something that wil never come back in such a way.

CD review GRUESOME "Dimension of Horror" EP

Veröffentlicht am 9. Mai 2016 von Markus W. in Gruesome, Death, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, News, CD Review

(7/10) It's maybe a coinsidence or something that was planned very well. The new Gruesome EP and Death's "Scream Bloody Gore" re-release enter the shops at the same time. So we will have the original and Gruesome's salute at the same time. You can't get more.

Anyhow, Gruesome's new record is called "Dimension of Horror" and contains six death monsters that are again influence very much by Chuck Schuldiner's Death. After having been part of Death To All, Matt Harvey and Gus Rios started to write their own songs with the aim to keep Death's sound alive. And they managed.

The first result of this cooperation was the "Savage Land" release, an album that got pretty good feedback. What follows is "Dimension of Horror", an EP on which the band continues fulfilling their mission.

The tunes on this EP are face-smashing metal tracks that shows the band in a good shape and form. Each of the six numbers is build on raging rhythms, blistering riffs and deep growls. Gruesome doesn't spend a lot of time in writing long and epical songs. Each of the tunes is right to the point and none of them is overloaded with unnecessary frills. This doesn't mean that they aren't technically ambitions. It;s just the true energy that rules.

This package is rounded off by the excellent artwork done by Ed Repka, a master of his trade.

Gruesome adds with "Dimension of Horror" a well done new EP to their discography that enriches today's death metal.

CD review THE RESISTANCE "Torture tactics"

Veröffentlicht am 2. März 2015 von Markus W. in The Resistance, Death, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, CD Review, News

( 8/10) "Scars" has been released 2 years ago and now it's time for some new stuff from Swedish The Resistance. For the ones who might missed the band so far - it is Jesper Strombald (ex-In Flames) Glenn Ljungstorem (ex-In Flames), Marco Aro (The Haunted), Chris Barkenjo ex-Grave) and Rob Hakemo (ex-M.A.N.). This quintet stands for quite some experience and this can be heard on the new album. "Torture tactics" will be released end of February and comes with ten songs. Six of them are new ones. Next to those there are four bonus tracks on the album - two from "Rise from treason" and two from the earlier mentioned "Scars".

The new songs are uncompromising ones that are straight to the point. This means that they aren't too long. But they are very intense and the mini album provides you with 30 minutes of brute death metal.

The opener "For war" hits already bulls-eye. It's a raging track with intelligent tempo changes. The booming rhythm section gives the tune a murder groove that is excellent headbanger stuff. "Dead" takes the same line by being a bit slower than the opener. I was reminded to Nightrage when I heard this song. "Cowards" and the angry "Deception" add to the positive impression of this EP. And also "The burning" doesn't take any prisoners. This is probabaly the most brutal track on the EP. Good to have a kind of a break with the insturmental "Dying words".

As mentioned, the EP has also four songs from earlier releases which show the The Resistance continues their journey.

The mini album is a bridge till the new longplayer will be released later this year. It contains six new tracks that are all good. I have to admit that it took me 3-4 rounds to get into the EP. After this time investment things became pure fun. Fans from The Resistance and Swedish death metal will enjoy this release.

  9. Face to face

DEATH DTA on tour in Europe in spring

Veröffentlicht am 2. Oktober 2014 von Markus W. in Death, Death DTA, Death Metal, Massacre, Loudblast, Abysmal Dawn, Tour, News

Coming February and March, DEATH DTA – the official tribute to Chuck and DEATH featuring former members - will set sail from the U.S. in order to pay homage to Schuldiner‘s ingenuity and revive his oeuvre‘s magic over the course of the 20th anniversary of the legendary Symbolic album in selected European cities. The top-class all-star line-up will consist of two original members from Symbolic times – namely drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT) and guitarist Bobby Koelble – as well as of vocalist/guitarist Max Phelps (CYNIC) and bassist Steve Di Giorgio (TESTAMENT, SADUS). Deathly support will come from their fellow countrymen in MASSACRE (featuring DEATH‘s co-founding member Rick Rozz on guitar and DEATH’s former bass player Terry Butler) and ABYSMAL DAWN together, with French death-thrash pioneers LOUDBLAST. Sounds like a great package.

CD review DEATH "Leprosy" re-release

Veröffentlicht am 28. April 2014 von Markus W. in Death, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, CD Review, News

(*/10) Doubtless Death has been one of the biggest influencers for a whole new genre - death metal. Brutal and racing fast death metal songs have been merged with technical capabilities. And with Chuck Schuldiner, the founder of the band, Death had a very virtuoso guitarist. Next to this Chuck also did the vocal and I like his voice, since it is not purely growling like we know from other Tampa bands like Cannibal Corpse and Obituary. Schuldiner used a mix between growls and with very rough, more thrash-like vocals. This made the band also easier accessable for a broader audiance.

As we all know Schuldiner died far too early, but his legacy stays. A bunch of excellent death metal records are still a pleasure to listen to and are still unqiue. After a few earlier re-releases from discs like "Human" and "The sound of perseverance" it was time for a re-release of the band's first real masterpiece called "Leprosy".

The original release date was in 1989 and followd the debut "Scream bloody gore". "Leprosy" is up till today a milestone in heavy metal and a reference album for many bands. It combines the unleashed power and aggressiveness of bands like Possessed with the screaming guitars from Slayer and the demonic vibe of Venom. All this spiced up with the already mentioned unique vocals from Chuck. Songs like the brutal "Left to die" or the diabolic "Open casket" with it's well placed breaks are death metal anthems. All of the songs are remastered by Alan Douches, which improves the quality just a bit compared to the original release, which had already areally good sound.

So what's really new with the re-release? Next to the regular album the new version comes with two extra CD's. A nice add-on. One disc contains rehersal material and the other is a live recording of Death in December 1988.

The problem with those two extras is the sound quality. That tapes from the rehearsal aren't high quality is in the nature of things. And those recordings are definitely something for die-hard fans of the band. Also the two live shows, which have been recorded in Rochester, New York and Bloomfield, New Jersey are something for collectors only. Also their sound is very much bootleg level and comes pretty low-fi and basic out of the speakers. But they are for sure documents of the history of Death.

All in all  "Leprosy" still is a milestone in death metal. With the two extra CD's the re-release also offers extra goodies which makes it very interesting for all collectors and enthusiasts of the band.

Veröffentlicht am 22. März 2014 von Markus W. in Death Metal, Death, News

Remastered version of DEATH classic "Leprosy"

Reclapse Records will release a remastered version of "Leprosy" - the masterpiece of Death. It doesn;t sound that much different than the original version, but it makes again very clear how good the band was and how much ahead of time they have been.

RIP Chuck.
