CD review NAPALM DEATH "Coded Smears and More Uncommon Slurs"

(*/10) Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death released 15 full-length records, spread over three decades. The awesome "Apex Predator - Easy Meat", released in 2015, was the latest one to date and it has been a lot of singles and some split releases that also enriched the discography of this timeless extreme metal powerhouse. Furthermore there are quite some bonus tracks that found their way on Japan-only releases, and so on.

"Coded Smears and More Uncommon Slurs" is a compilation that summarises a lot of this extra material and bundles it on this double CD release. The album covers the Century Media days up-to-date which means in other words, the time span between 2004 and 2016. In total there are 31 extreme metal songs that ended up on the tracklist, providing 90 minutes of grindcore and hardcore that doesn't compromise on anything.

"Coded Smears and More Uncommon Slurs" helps a lot to complete individual Napalm Death record collections, providing rarities that might caused a gap so far.

CD review TANKARD "Hymns For the Drunk"

(*/10) There is a lot of Tankard these days. Noise/BMG re-released the first seven Tankard album, incl. the "Alien"-EP and the Tankwart cover album - all with a great booklet and liner notes, showing a passion for details. These seven CD cover Tankards 80's and 90's highlights before the guys left Noise and went to Century Media for two albums.

In the beginning of the new millennium the quartet from Mainhatten inked a deal with AFM Records for some recordss and it's these years that are combined on the "Hymns For the Drunk" compilation.

"B-Day" was the first longplayer that came via AFM Records and it's tracks like "Rectifier" and "Need Money For Beer" which represent the 2002 longplayer. The last album for the label was "Vol(l)ume 14", a record that included thrashers such as "Time Warp" and "Rules for Fools". I would have appreciated "Black Plague (BP) being part of the compilation too, but you can't get it all.

You might wonder why there are songs like "Zombie Attack" and "The Morning After" on this releases since the songs are from the Noise-years. The thing is that Tankard re-recorded these classics for the 2007 "Best Case Scenario: 25 years in Beer". This album was published by AFM and that's why the tracktlist contains the classics too.

All in all "Hymns For the Drunk" is a comprehensive compilation that shows German thrash metal warriors in their post Noise years, enriched with some classics no Tankard fan should miss.

SCORPIONS unveil details about “Born to Touch Your Feelings – Best of Rock Ballads”

A pretty safe bet that Christmas is just around the corner can be based on the amount of ‘Best of…’ releases, with some of those solely focusing on the soulful moments of a band. This pattern comes back year by year and also 2017 will not be an exception.

This time it’s the legendary Scorpions that put together a compilation of not only 'ballads', it’s the “Best of Rock Ballads’. I’m not sure if the world was in restless wait for such an album, but … it comes with three new songs, some remastered versions and some more. In this sense there's coming some more joy with these ballads than just another version of "Wind of Change".

“Born to Touch Your Feelings – Best of Rock Ballads” will be released on November 24th and includes the following tracklist:

  1. Born To Touch Your Feelings (“MTV Unplugged” Studio Edit)
  2. Still Loving You (“Comeblack” Version)
  3. Wind Of Change (“Comeblack” Version)
  4. Always Somewhere (2015 Remaster)
  5. Send Me An Angel (New Acoustic Version 2017)
  6. Holiday (2015 Remaster)
  7. Eye Of The Storm (Radio Edit)
  8. When The Smoke Is Going Down (2015 Remaster)
  9. Lonely Nights
  10. Gypsy Life
  11. House Of Cards (Single Edit)
  12. The Best Is Yet To Come
  13. When You Came Into My Life (“MTV Unplugged” Studio Edit)
  14. Lady Starlight (2015 Remaster)
  15. Follow Your Heart (New Full-Band Version 2017)
  16. Melrose Avenue (New Song)
  17. Always Be With You (New Song)
