CD review AXEL RUDI PELL "Knight Call"

(8/10) „Knight Call“ is the title of the next brilliant longplayer of German guitar wizard Axel Rudi Pell. Pell is a hard working ‚craftsman‘ in the fields of classic rock and metal. Over almost 30 years the blond six-string player released many excellent records, not even talking about his perfect contribution to Steeler's two classic longplayers.

The new album follows the 2016 release „Game of Sins“ and features ten new songs that are all done in the typical Axel Rudi Pell fashion. It‘s not that the album surprises with unexpected twists. It’s more the small details that make a difference. What‘s maybe seen as working with a cookie-cutter approach is actually something totally different. It‘s Pell‘s passion for music that sparks his constant search for small details and improvements.

As not expected different also the new longplayer comprises of traditional metal and hardrock that gets its inspiration from band like Deep Purple and Rainbow. This means that things will stay as they were and that‘s good news. Pell doesn‘t reinvent his sound and keeps his success formula alive and kicking. The blond guitarist isn‘t looking for innovation. He‘s looking for perfection and he succeeds.

„Knight Call“ is the next well-crafted rock, released from the German riff master. Pell sticks to his roots, meaning that the album features music that goes hand in hand with earlier releases. It‘s good music, done by passionate musicians who avoid all trends and fashions. Pell lives rock music and it’s the authenticity of him and his band mates that makes this longplayer to a treat for fans of classic rock music.

CD review AXEL RUDI PELL "The Ballads V"

Veröffentlicht am 8. April 2017 von Markus W. in Axel Rudi Pell, Steamhammer, Rock, Hardrock, News, CD Review, Bang Your Head, Ballads, Live, Classic Rock

(8/10) Normally this kind of records have a street date that's a few weeks before Christmas because they can act as nice presents for people that don’t want to do something wrong. Longplayers, filled with ballads, are a safe bet since this kind of songs can reach a wider audience. At least you can reach out to more music fans than with screaming guitars only.

In most of the cases I would guess that also a financial benefit is at least a strong motivator for such an album, but things are different when it comes to Ruhrpott-based guitar wizard Axel Rudi Pell. The six-stringer released in the past a series of four longplayers, all filled with ballads. Those records have been highly successful with the latest one even entering the German album chats. Therefor it seems natural that Pell continues with this successful outlet, showing the soft core of a hard rocking man.

And as the earlier discs followed a simple numbering systematic also the new record uses the same approach. “The Ballads V” is the title of the new longplayer that features ten songs. The fact that the blond guitarist is too ambitious to just take some of his old songs and put them on a new disc, things get quite exciting on “The Ballads V”.

Starting with “Love’s Holding On” means approaching the first stunning highlight. Pell invited a guest for this song. It’s no less than Bonnie Tyler who agreed to do a gorgeous duet with Johnny Gioeli. This song is the first single and it’s a great choice. These voices are in perfect harmony, making the tune to a great opener. After such an impressive beginning it’s “I See Fire” that’s next. No guests are included but it’s a cover version. And to our surprise it’s a song from shooting star Ed Sheeran that became a new outfit. The tune is rearranged and fits perfect to Axel Rudi Pell’s sound.

To round off a great start into the album means also mentioning “On the Edge of Our Time”. Like the first double header also this tune is a new one. It’s a typical power ballad that comes with a lot of feel. I must say that the song doesn’t bring a lot of new to the table, but in the end it’s a well-done ballad of which a lot of other bands only could dream of.

The next songs are better known since they have been released on regular studio albums. However, the fact that tunes like “When Truth Hurts” and especially “Hey Hey My My”, originally by Neil Young, are excellent ballads makes this album still to an entertaining experience that acts as a silent counterpart to the hectic daily life.

The Grand Finale is getting closer and its two live songs that finishes the album. “The Line” from the 2000 release “The Masquerade” is the first one, followed by a superb 14 minutes version of Deep Purple’s “Mistreated” that was recorded at Bang Your Head in 2014 with Doogie White on vocals.

It’s up to you to decide if you like these kind of releases. My conclusion is, that “The Ballads V” is closer to a new ARP album than being a simple compilation of known stuff. I like the album that still includes enough rock feel for having a good time.

CD review AXEL RUDI PELL "Magic moments - 25 anniversary special show"

Veröffentlicht am 21. April 2015 von Markus W. in Axel Rudi Pell, Steeler, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Classic Rock, Rock, News, CD Review, Live

(*/10) I still can remember when a friend of mine recommended an album to me in school from a new German metal band. Their name: Steeler. I first thought about the band from Yngwie Malmsteen, but they haven't been from Germany. However, he gave me the vinyl with five guys drawn on the cover. The name of the album was/is "Strike back" and I felt in love with what I heard. It was the time of Pretty Maids' "Red, hot and heavy" and Steeler's sound went into the same direction. The next album "Undercover animal" was even better but sad enough, the band disbanded in 1989.

But the axeman of Steeler continued and started a fabulous solo career. His name: Axel Rudi Pell. Why do I mention all this? Because it took till 2014 for the guys to come together for playing some songs from the good old times - live on stage. "Night after night", Rockin' the city" and "Undercover animal" filled the summer night in 2014 when Axel Rudi Pell performed his 25th anniversary show as part of the Bang Your Head festival in Balingen, Germany. It was great to hear those songs again and I still wish that the Steeler guys would re-record the two mentioned milestones in German metal history. I don't think it will happen, but there is always hope.

Next to that "Magic moments - 25th anniversary special show" has much more to offer than only a smaller Steeler reunion. Basically Axel Rudi Pell performed a wide selection of ARP classics that cover early tracks like "Nasty reputation" from the debut up to new material like "Into the storm" from the latest studio record. Last but not least a few cover songs have been played as well. Deep Purple's "Black night", with Ronnie Atkins from Pretty Maids, made the fans freak out. Graham Bonnet came on stage for singing "Since you've been gone" and the show was finished with nothing less than the mighty hardrock hymn "Smoke on the water".

Next to the great musical journey through metal Axel Rudi Pell invited also many friends to the party for performing the tunes together with him. Rob Rock has been there as well as Jeff Scott Soto. Joerg Michael had a drum performance and Vinnie Appice and Bobby Rondinelli had a fantastic drum battle in the last third of the show.

A birthday party couldn't be much better than this. Cheers and to the next 25 years.

PS: The DVD/BluRay also includes "The rehearsals" and comes with 255 minutes running time. But since I only can refer to the audio version I can't tell you much more than this about the extra.

  1. Call her princess
  2. Night after night
  3. Rockin' the city

Axel Rudi Pell played a 25 years anniversary show lat year as part of the Bang Your Head festival in Balingen, Germany. The guitar wizard invited many friends for this special night. The result was an impressive setlist, containing hits from ARP and classic hardrock tunes from bands like Deep Purple and Rainbow.

My highlight was that also some Steeler songs have been played. Steeler released two great records in the 80's that contain real metal pearls. Great to hear those anthems again.

Live review AXEL RUDI PELL & REBELLIOUS SPIRIT, De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, 20.09.2014

German guitar wizard Axel Rudi Pell started the second leg of his tour to promote the latest release "Into the storm". The journey also brought him to The Netherlands. As a support he had the young Germans from Rebellious Spirit with him on the road. This power package rocked Zoetermeer on a Saturday night very well I must say.

The young Swabians from Rebellious Spirit had the task to warm-up the crowd and they did a good job. Having released their last album a few days ago, the guys blew their sleazy hardrock into the crowd; full of enthusiasm and energy. As I wrote already in the review of their album "Obsession", they remind a bit to Kissin' Dynamite. But however, they had fun that night and transfered this to the fans. A good job as an opener and the crowd was looking forward to Pell & friends.

Live review AXEL RUDI PELL & REBELLIOUS SPIRIT, De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, 20.09.2014

Quater to ten Axel Rudi Pell and his band entered the stage and started a two hour show. The guys proved that you can have quality AND quantity. Since some bands don't play longer than 70 minutes nowadays, it is great to see a band on stage for 120 minutes - and enjoying every single minute of it.

From the very first song on the powerful sound was perfect and crystal clear. Eventhoug the Gioeli stated a few times that the band couldn't hear themselves the sound for the audience was excellent. Better than the other way round.

A look on the setlist shows that Pell did a great mix between old and new. And I think it is a smart idea to do the medley's of some songs. By having such a huge amount of released tracks it is the best way to bring most of the 'hits' on the setlist. There has been the old stuff like "Nasty reputation" from the debut as well as some new material like "Into the storm". But also the band classics like "Mystica" and "Eternal prisoner" have been performed. Needless to say that "Call her princess" was performed too. For me this is the best Pell song and actually it could become an own song in the live set instead of being part in a medley.

But the songs are one thing- the performance is another one. A good song can only shine on stage while being performed in a good way. And ARP did a perfect job this Saturday night in Zoetermeer. Johnny Gioeli is a frontman you can't stop. Next to the fact that he is a great singer he is also a real frontman that also entertains the crowd. Not to forget the keyboards from Ferdy Doernberg and the tight rhythm section with Volker Krawcak and Bobby Rondelli. By the way, as Gioeli joked, "Bobby is the only drummer who can play a drum solo and chew chewing gum at the same time".

And last but not least the master himself - Axel Rudi Pell. It was a pleasure to listen to his guitar. It was also great to see that he gave so much space to his band mates. It was not about him, it was about the band. He didn't want to get more into focus than the others, which is really great to see. I think, that this unit called ARP is also the secret of the long lasting success of the six-stringer and his band. This is a hands-on band with great song and no 'I am the rock star' attitude.

To spend a Saturday night with sich a concert with two powerful bands was a great experience. The tour still continues and if you have the guys are coming to your time - don't think twice. Give them a warm welcome and join the show.

CD review AXEL RUDI PELL "Into the storm" Deluxe Edition

Veröffentlicht am 8. August 2014 von Markus W. in Axel Rudi Pell, Steeler, Heavy Metal, Hardrock, Rock, CD Review, News

(8/10) Our blond guitar wizard from Bochum, Axel Rudi Pell, released his newest album "Into the storm" a few months ago (see review link at the end of this post).

End of August SPV will publish a deluxe version of the album. Next to the ten original tracks there will be another five bonus songs on this version. It starts with the typical Pell instrumental "White cats (Opus #6 Scivolare) followed by "Way to Mandalay", which is mid tempo rocker in the best meaning of the word. The tune has a great melody and fits very well.

Than we go live. "Nasty reputation" from the debut and "Strong as a rock" found the way on the deluxe version of "Into the storm". The sound of those songs is absolutly OK. No overdubs and purely authentic, but still in a good quality - that's what you get. Last but not least there is a medley on the album, which starts with "Too late", goes over into "Call her princess", continues with "Eternal prisoner" and closes again with "Too late".

The entire package is rounded off by the video clip to "Long way to go" plus a 16 pages long booklet with new photos and liner notes by Axel Rudi Pell himself.

If you have to buy the deluxe version while having the original release is up to you. The five extra tracks are a nice add-on and the package is for sure something for die-hard Pell fans and collectors.

CD 1:

  1. The inquisitorial procedure (intro)
  2. Tower of lies
  3. Long way to go
  4. Burning chains
  5. When truth hurts
  6. Changing times
  7. Touching heaven
  8. High above
  9. Hey hey my my (Neil Young cover)
  10. Into the storm
  11. White cats (Opus #6 scivolare)
  12. Way to Manadalay

CD 2:

  1. Nasty reputation (live)
  2. Strong as a rock (live)

CD review ALESTORM "Sunset on the golden age"

Veröffentlicht am 30. Juli 2014 von Markus W. in Alestorm, Santiano, Sabaton, Running Wild, Axel Rudi Pell, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, CD Review, News

(7/10) What happens if you merge Santiano with Sabaton and spice it up with a bit of the Dropkick Murphies and Running Wild? Exactly. You get Alestorm.

The band, that started as Battleheart, re-named in 2007, which means that they reflaged and continued the journey as Alestorm. "Sunset of the golden age" is album number four from the 4 sailor under the Jolly Roger.

In total the album comes with 10 new tracks. One of those is a cover version. It's not another metal track they make their own. No it's a pop mega seller - "Hangover" from Taio Cruz. For all of you who liked the song so far but never dared to admit this - now you have your version. All of a sudden the song rocks and sounds like being live from the quaiside-bar. Well done and more authentic than the original. Who dares wins.

But this is of course just one out of ten tracks. The own compositions are quite cool too. The opener "Welcome to the plank" sounds like the pirate version of Kreator - mainly due to the vocals of Christopher Bowes in the verse parts. A powerful riff introduces "Drink". If Swedish Sabaton would be pirates they would sound like this catchy tune. But there is also the folk compontent in Alestorm's songs. "Magnetic North" is one example as well as "Quest for ships" which sounds like a metal version of a Dropkick Murphys song. "Wooden leg!" is very fast and straight forward, while the longest track is reserved for the end. The bouncer "Sunset of the golden age", also the title track, is an eleven minutes long epos which shows quite some variations. The track is kept mid-speed, has an irresistable hookline and a great melody. It's a good song, eventhough Alestorm has their strength more in the 3-4 minutes tracks. But anyhow, a nice try with an entertaining result.

Funny side note when it comes to the cover of the album. I don't know if it is purely coinsident, but the cover looks very similar to the one of the latest Axel Rudi Pell release. A prove that the metal armada is still sailing on and on and on.

Pirates and metal belong together. That's what we know since Running Wild. Alestorm picked up the topic and  made their version out of it. Pirate metal 2.0.

  1. Walk the plank
  2. Drink
  3. Magnetic North
  4. 1741 (The battle of Cartago)
  5. Mead from hell
  6. Surf squid warfare
  7. Quest for ships
  8. Wooden leg!
  9. Hangover
  10. Sunset of the golden age
