CD review WITCH MOUNTAIN "Mobile of angels"

Veröffentlicht am 14. September 2014 von Markus W. in Witch Mountain, Candlemass, Avatarium, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, Blues, Classic Rock, CD Review, News

(7/10) The cover and the name of the band clearly indicates what to expect. The band from Portland delivers a combination of doom, metal and blues. They are a stable part of the doom scene in Portland. Witch Mountain started in 1997 and they are still around. Good stuff.

What makes the sound of the band special are the female vocals of Uta Plotkin. The combination of heavy doomy riff with the powerful and clean female vocals works pretty well.

The opener "Psycho animundi" reflects all those trademarks of the band already. The track has some almost fragile parts mainly with just the vocals and a few guitar chords while on the other hand there are heavy riff explosions that built a real counterpart to the silent parts.

Compared to the opener "Can't settle" is an almost swinging number. It's a bit faster and the tune sounds a bit lighter than "Psycho animunidi".

The heart of "Mobile of angels" is the ten minutes long "Your corrupt ways (Sour the hymn)". It's a slow track with a riff that accompanies you though the entire song. The clean vocals of Plotkin are amazing and the whole arrangement of the song reminds me to Avatarium. It's an impressive doom anthem that puts a spell on you.

After such a highlight it is difficult for the other songs to keep the level. The title track at least adds another compontent to the album. Silent and almost acoustic the tune spreads an oppresive atmosphere. It is a sphereful song with spoken words as vocals. It's storytelling with musical support. An interesting combination that works.

In general I have to say that the second half of the album became more silent. The heavy riffs are not that dominant anymore as they have been in the beginning. Still "The sharp truth takes" is an intesive doom rocker, just with some more blues and classic rock influences. What I really like with this song is the guitar solo towards the end. Well done and well placed.

"Mobile of angels" is a good doom album which should be checked by fans from Candlemas, Orange Goblin, YOB and Avatarium. It's worth it.

Swedish doom rockers Avatarium posted a few statements on their Facebook side reagrding Leif Edling and the new EP. Here is the statement:

"To answer some questions being asked:
1. Leif Edling is overworked and that's why he can't go and tour with us at the moment. He is still very involved in the recording process for the ep though.
2.Today we got the mixes of the 2 new original recordings that will be on the EP. There will also be at least 2 live recordings.
3. The web shop will be up as soon as the guy in charge is back from vacation, hopefully in a couple of weeks.
4. We are also talking to our booking agency about trying to do a short tour this fall or in the beginning of next year.

Also,
it has been a true pleasure to meet the fans of Avatarium on the shows we have been doing and we hope that this is just the beginning of a long trip together with you good people!!

Hope to see some of you at the Metal Mean Festival in August!!"

CD review JUPITER SOCIETY "From endangered to extinction"

Veröffentlicht am 21. April 2014 von Markus W. in Jupiter Society, Krux, Candlemass, Avatarium, CD Review, News, Alternative Metal

(7/10) Haven’t heard about the Jupiter Society yet? Me too. But this will change with this review.

The band/project was founded in 2008 in Stockholm, Sweden by Krux/Avatarium keyboarder Carl Westerholm. The project released already three full-length records from which „From endangered to extinction“ is the last one.

The concept of Jupiter Society is about an imaginary story of the the last hours of humanity. It’s a story about the SciFi and the outer space.

What is interesting with Jupiter Society is the amount of well-known musician who are supporting Westholm with his project. Next to the keyboarder we have the fantastic Mats Leven, being responsible for the lead vocals in some of the songs. Marcus Jidell supports on the guitar and also Leif Edling himself played bass on one of the songs.

How about the music? The album contains six songs - all extraordinary long. Of course keyboards play an important part on this album. But that doesn’t mean at all that the songs aren’t heavy. Westholm uses the keys more to create an atmosphere and a sound pattern on which the guitars can shine. Already the opener „Enemy march“ creates a gloomy vibe. The female vocals fit perfect to this dynamic tune. The heaviest song on the album is probably „No survivors“. The theatric approach of this song let you dive into an apocalyptic end-time scenario. Highlight is the 13 minutes epos called „Defeat“. It’s a very complex masterpiece which is a melange of many different elements. Heavy guitar riff, meet fragile female vocals, meet nice keyboard melodies.

The whole album could be a metal soundtrack for an SciFi movie. Interesting soundscapes from an interesting project. Worth to check out.

Live review AVATARIUM, Roadburn Festival, 013, Tilburg, 13.04.2014

Veröffentlicht am 15. April 2014 von Markus W. in Avatarium, Roadburn, Heavy Metal, Doom Metal, Live Review, News

What a highlight on a Sunday afternoon. After Swedish doom masters Candlemass already facinated the crowd on Friday night another great Swedish band found the way to Tilburg in Holland. Avatarium, the new group of Candlemass bass player Leif Edling, played their very first show outside Sweden. Unfortunately Edling couldn't play the show due to health issues. He was replaced, by Timat's Anders Iwers.

Enough formalities - how was the show? It was 17:30 in Tilburg when Avatarium entered the stage. As said already, it was the first time the band played outside of their home country Sweden and surprisingly the hall was only filled half. Own fault of everybody who missed the show. It was an excellent experience.

Live review AVATARIUM, Roadburn Festival, 013, Tilburg, 13.04.2014

I could imagine that the band was a bit nervous and probably they didn't know what to expect. This was recognizable in the humble way they entered the stage and to start directly with "Moonflower". Later on during the show it was also the announcements from Jennie-Ann which have been, in a likable way, a bit self-effacing. It was nice to see that with each song they played nervousness changed into excitement.
Since Avatarium has just one album released so far the setlist focussed of course on those tracks. Songs like "Pandora's egg" and the relaxed "Lady in the lamp" are great tunes. They sound awesome on the album, but Avatarium is also capable to play live in the same cool and intesive way. This has mainly to do with the vocals. Jennie-Ann is able to perform the songs live in the same great way as she sounds on the record. This voice is just a gift for heavy metal. A treat for eyes and ears.
But not to forget the rest of the band. Marcus Jidell's (Evergrey) heavy guitar riffs have been the perfect counterpart to the emotional, sometimes fragile, vocals. Carl Westholm (Krux and Jupiter Society) added with the keyboard a tight soundscape, while Lars Skoeld and Anders Iwers, both from Tiamat, build a strong rhythm foundation. Esp. Anders, who replaced band founder Leif Edling, did a really good job.

Thumbs up and hope to see them soon again.

CD review AVATARIUM "Avatarium"

Veröffentlicht am 28. Oktober 2013 von Markus W. in Avatarium, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, CD Review

(8/10) It was a bad news when Candlemass announced that "Psalms of the dead" will be their last studio record.

But since this Friday there is at least some hope - called Avatarium. Avatarium is a new band with very experienced musicians. First to mention of course Leif Edling, bassplayer and text writter from Candlemass and Krux. He is accompanied by Marcus Jidell (Evergrey, Royal Hunt) on guitar, Carl Westholm (Jupiter Society) on keyboard, Lars Skold (Tiamat) on drums and the fantastic singer Jennie-Ann Smith. They all together managed to create an excellent new album, which, and this is not a big surprise, plays doom metal with some classic rock influences here and there.

Based on the vocals I was partly also reminded to the good old Zed Yago in the "From over yonder". Smith's voice fits perfect to the songs and the sound of the band. Her almost bluesy vocals gives each song a very personal touch and traspaorts a lot of feeling. She never comes close to some operatic singing like a lot of other female singers. Jennie-Ann is the biggest newcomer this year when it comes to singing.

I think that this record was for Edling a good change to step out of the 'bounderies' of Candlemass and develop doom metal further.

"Moonhorse" is fantastic opener for the album. The song combines heavy doom riffs with acoustic parts with almost fragile female vocals. The melody of the song is just awesome. "Avantarium" is another pearl on this record. Starting with a mighty riff the song creates a really dark atmosphere. Compared to the title track "Bonefloer" sounds almost swinging and happy. The final song is called "Lady in the lamp". A beautiful ballad based on great harmonies. It has a classic rock element and reminds in some parts even to Deep Purple. A real highlight.

"Avantaruim" became an awesome record which definitely compensates that there will be (most probabaly) no new Candlesmass album. Cool stuff. Listen to it.

Leif Edling's new band called AVATARIUM

Veröffentlicht am 30. Juli 2013 von Markus W. in Avatarium, Heavy Metal, Candlemass, Doom Metal

There is a 'new' Swedish metal band around called Avatarium. Are they new? Yes and no. Avantarium is the new band of Leif Edling (Candlemass, Krux). The band will be completed by Marcus Jindell from Evergrey (g), Lars Skold from Tiamat (d), Carl Westholm (k) and singer Jennie-Ann Smith.

They signed a contract with Nuclear Blast and the first 12" will be released already on September 23. The 12" will contain three songs:

  1. Moonhorse
  2. Boneflower
  3. War pigs (Black Sabbath cover)

I'm already curious how the songs will sound.
