CD review ARMORED SAINT "Carpe Noctum"

Veröffentlicht am 18. Dezember 2016 von Markus W. in Armored Saint, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, US Metal, News, CD Review, Live

(9/10) It seems that this year's Christmas present arrived already two weeks too early. As reported a few weeks ago it's power metal legend Armored Saint that started a PledgeMusic campaign for a new live album of the iconc five-piece band.

Armored Saint isn't one of these bands that regularly releases live records. It was 28 years ago when the guys from California published with "Saints Will Conquer" a six track live EP and that was it - up till now.

"Carpe Noctum", a name the fans voted for based on a pre-selection, features eight tracks that comes with new material such as "Win Hands Down", the title track from the latest studio output. That legendary Armored saint tracks needs to be part of this release too is a given. The awesome "Last Train Home" and the closer "Reign of Fire" belong to the best tunes the quintet ever wrote and are well-placed on this longplayer.

A view on the tracklist also shows no overlap with the '88 EP. "Carpe Noctum" features songs that officially haven't been released live so far. The only little downer with this album is the running time. 38 minutes aren't too long, esp. knowing how many great songs the band has in their musical bagpack. One or two more tracks would have been a good extra for fans of the band who waited almost three decades for another live album of the Armored Saint.

The sound of this live album, that was captured in Wacken 2015 and Aschaffenburg, is excellent. The production finds the right balance between authenticity, energy and a clear sound.

All in all it's exciting to listen to the bands newest live disc, something we had to wait for such a long time. Armored Saint is heading towards a new peak in their career. John Bush, Joey Vera, Phil Sandoval, Gonzo Sandoval and Jeff Duncan are  Armored Saint - a spearhead of powerful metal music. I like.

Live review QUEENSRYCHE / ARMORED SAINT / BEYOND THE BLACK, Amsterdam, 03.08.2015

Veröffentlicht am 4. August 2015 von Markus W. in Queensryche, Armored Saint, Beyond The Black, Heavy Metal, Live Review, News, Power Metal, US Metal

This is a package that has more than a 'wow' factor. This package is awesome. The mighty Queensryche together with the legendary Armored Saint one one stage that night; no way not going there - even on a very warm and sunny summer night.

The role of the opener was reserved for the German newcomers Beyond The Black. The 2014 founded band has released their debut a few month ago and the reactions have been very positive.

Beyond The Black started around 19:30. I was surprised that the Melkweg was already filled pretty well and the band got quite some attention. The longer they played the more fans found their spot in front of the stage. This means that the guys did a great job in warming up the crowd and it was worth to be at the Melkweg in time. I hope that the Beyond The Black will come back to Holland soon - and maybe with a bit more playing time. They could be great support for bands like Within Temptation and/or Delain. Let's see.

After a short break the stage was prepared for Armored Saint. Since the last album was a great one, expectations have been pretty high. Can U deliver? Yes, the guys could. It was fantastic to see the five guys back in Holland after so many years. It was in 2006 when I have seen them tha lst time in Arnhem which was a great experience.

The band started with the title track of the new album. "Win hands down" was very much appreciated by the crowd. The studio version of the song is already great, but the live version was even more intense. The set was a constant mix of old and new. Classics like "Rasing fear" and "Last train home" have been played as well as newer stuff.

With some bands the new songs can't keep the high level of their classics. Not with Armored Saint. New and old built one seamless unit with all songs being on a high level.

The band obviously had a lot of fun to be in Europe again - and the first time in Amsterdam. John Bush did, as expected, an excellent job behind the mic. This voice is pure metal. Joey Vera sunk in his bass play, Sandoval and Duncan hammered the riffs into the Melkweg and Gonzo's drums delivered the right punch for an energetic show.

Highlight was with "Can U deliver" when all of a sudden a small third axeman joined. It was John Bush's son Guiseppe that joined for the song and it was a great experience to see the different metal generations on stage. Metal never dies.

The final track, "Madhouse", made a madhouse out of the Melkweg. Seeing Armored Saint live is always a great experience. I hope that those guys will stay together for many many more years. The are pure metal. Horns up.

Armored Saint set a high standard for Queensyche. But with having songs like "NM 156" and "Empire" in the backhand the five-piece from Seattle didn't have any problem to keep this high level, if...yes, if.

Todd was suffering from a bad cold that night, but it deserves a lot of respct that he worked himself through a shorter set. This guy doesn't disappoint fans and band mates. And honestly, even with the cold he was singing in an excellent way. With a cold he performed the Queensryche classics in a better way than Geoff Tate the last time I have seen him with Queensryche some years ago in Stockholm.

However, due to Todd's cold Queensryche played for around an hour only; covering a lot of the highlights from the past. "Nightrider" and "The needle lies" are always a treat for your metal ears.

Next to those pearls also a brandnew song was presented that night in Amsterdam. "Arrow of time" is the name of the track that sounds quite good, but can't live up to the other songs. But let's see and wait for the album. "Condition hüman" will be released in October and I guess we will get another cool Queensryche disc served on our plate.

After having played the mighty "Empire" it was time for Todd to allow himself some rest. I think that "Queen of the Reich" and "Take hold of the flame" has been originally planned as well, but couldn't be performed due to the mentioned circustances.

It was great to see the power metal package of Armored Saint and Queensryche supported by Beyond The Black - an excellent newcomer. This package is worth to go to and I hope that more of those metal feasts will be on the road soon.

CD review ARMORED SAINT "Win hands down"

Veröffentlicht am 30. Mai 2015 von Markus W. in Armored Saint, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, US Metal, News, CD Review

(10/10) Armored Saint is since decades one of the most underrated bands in metal. The five-piece from California was founded in 1980 by singer John Bush and bass player Joey Vera. After having had the chance to place a song on one of the legendary Metal Massacre samplers the band released their debut "March of the saint" in 1984.

From this moment on Armored Saint never released any bad longplayer. Each of their six records was a power metal highlight that gave the guys also support slots for bands like Metallica and the Scorpions.

Even two longer breaks couldn't stop the guys and 2015 will be the year of the band's longplayer number seven.

Nine brand new tracks have been recorded and ended up on "Win hands down". John Bush, Phil Sandoval, Jeff Duncan. Joey Vera and Gonzo Sandoval did again an excellent job. Each of the nine metal tracks on the album is a pure metal firework.

Five years after publishing "La raza" the band is hungry again for heavy riffs and grooving metal tracks.

The title tracks is also the opener for the new record. It's a typical Armored Saint track with a galloping rhythm and melody lines that only the Saint can write. This is metal on major league level.

"Mess" follows with screaming guitars and and it's another moment with a 'wow' factor. The highlight with "Mess" is the interplay of an harmonic chorus and a more gloomy verse.

Next track, next pleasure. In this case even with a double meaning. The tune itself is another pearl on "Win hands down". That's one thing. The second thing is the fact that the song is about the 'porn-industry'.

"Muscle memory" is a personal reflection about one's legacy. The track is starting more silent and reflecting. It's a thoughful one that is touching with a verse being quiet while the chorus brings back the power that caracterises the band from California.

A heavy riff starts "That was then, way back when". The song has a darker vibe than the others and a strong groove. It contains all the trademarks of the band and I was reminded to the "Delirious nomad" days.

Bass and guitar introduces "With a full head of steam"; a song that belongs to the hardest ones on "Win hands down". John Bush shows why he is one of the best singers in heavy metal - he shows this actually on each of the nine songs on the album. But this track also includes a premiere. Bush has a vocal partner. It's Pearl Aday, the wife of Anthrax guitar maniac Scott Ian, Bush shares the vocals with. The result is a full success. Next to that the guitars are screaming on "With a head full of steam" which makes the tune to one of the best ones on an album full of hits.

From hard to quiet again. "In an instant" is looking back to the Boston terror attack which showed that life can change in a second. The verse is vocals and accoustic guitar only before the number develops to a powerful metal track in the chorus. This pattern continues throughout the entire tune. Excellent when it comes to songwriting and performance.

Something totally different is the piano-based "Dive". It was that last song that has been recorded and shows another side of the Saint. The intension was to write a number that is lovely and dark in one. And listening to the track makes clear - experiment succeeded. It is a beautiful songs that reflects the musical diversity of Armored Saint by still sticking to their trademarks and roots.

"Up yours" is the closer on "Win hands down". It's another musical tornado that is an open invitation for headbanging.

Next to the very well done songs also the energetic production needs to be mentioned. The sound supports each of the nine tracks in a perfect way and makes "Win hands down" to a 50 minutes long metal experience that should not be missed by any metalhead.

Maybe it is the fact of being underrated that makes Armored Saint releasing excellent records with only killers. And maybe it is the breaks in the bands history that made them stronger too. It feels like Armored Saint is making music because the enjoy it. They are doing this with a full commitment and without compromises. This band is still breathing the spirit of metal. It is awesome to have those authentic bands like Armored Saint in a century where appearance is partly more important than passion, based on a solid foundation.

"Win hands down" is another milestone in Armored Saints musical history and an album that should be part of each metal collection. Ten thumbs up.

New ARMORED SAINT album this summer

Veröffentlicht am 5. März 2015 von Markus W. in Armored Saint, Power Metal, Heavy Metal, News

Great news. Metal legends Armored Saint are working on a new album that will be published in summer this year. Release date will be May 29 and the name of the longplayer will be "Win hands down".

John Bush (vocals) states: "When we began talking about a new record I told Joey Vera (bass) to pretend we were a really huge band and that we could do anything we wanted. At least that was the mindset we should have, from the writing to the production. What came out was Win Hands Down, which is our first record in five years. There's everything from classic ARMORED SAINT rocker songs to epic songs and we all dug deep deliver something special. If we weren't going to, then we shouldn't have bothered. I'm glad we did. In May we are doing some shows in the States with Saxon. It's a great way to get the ball rolling."

Vera further comments: "We're very excited about our new record coming out in May! We've been writing over the past year and half and we feel like we've written some amazing music. We can't wait to share it! To get our whistle's wet, we're super excited about doing some warm up gigs before the record release with the legendary Saxon this May! We're doing a total of six shows between the East Coast, Texas, West Coast and we couldn't think of a better way to start off the summer! See you all soon."
