New Year's Eve is an excellent moment in time to look back on the last 12 months and what's better than scrolling through photos made that year. I challenged myself in choosing my 12 favorites, which was not a too easy exercise. Anyhow, I've chosen these photos from various shows in 2016.

Have a good start in 2017 and keep on rocking. Thanks for all your support \m/

CD review AMON AMARTH "Jomsviking"

Veröffentlicht am 21. März 2016 von Markus W. in Amon Amarth, Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Heavy Metal, Viking, News, CD Review, Doro, Warlock

(9/10) Swedish death metal command Amon Amarth hase been in the studio for working on the bands tenth studio abum. "Jomsviking" is the name of the game and it is the first time that the vikings from Stockholm did a record that comes with a conceptual approach.

Amon Amarth tells a tragic story without any happy end, that includes love and revenge as the basic theme. The story line is based on the jomsvikings which has been a mercenary viking troop that was known for their mercilessness and ruthless. The myth around this gang is the background for the actual story which is about love and death of a young man, falling in love with a girl that is already promised to somebody else. All this leads to love, hate, murder and revenge ... with no happy end.

"First Kill" is the opener and it's a typical Amon Marth song. Hegg's vocals are great, as we know it from the predecessors. The same goes for the furious guitars that are another trademark of the Swedes.

It's a melodic guitar riff that kicks-off "Wanderer". The tune is kept in a more moderate pace, which doesn't mean that it isn't another heavy strike. This slow moving beast slowly creeps into your mind and you don't get rid of it anymore.

The third chapter of this yarn is called "On a Blood of Sea". Amon Amarth gears up again which makes the number to grooving melodic death metal anthem with some more classic guitarslines.

In general each of the eleven tracks on "Jomsviking" is on a very high level and it is hard to pick out some highlights. However, "Raise Your Horns" is another heyday moment since the track has a quite catchy chorus and  a well placed sing-a-long part in the middle. This tune can becme a constant factor on Amon Amarth's setlists.

The following "The Way of Vikings" starts dramatic, almost like the start of a movie, before the Swedish storytellers add another heavy chapter to the book of "Jomsviking".

"At Dawns First Light" combines traditional Maiden-melody lines with the harsh vocals from Hegg, while the next real smasher is entitled "A Dream That Cannot Be". It is German metal queen Doro Pesch, that added some vocals to this special song. It's amazing how good the two voices fit together. Doro's voice sounds much darker and evil than what we know from the iconic singer. "A Dream That Cannot Be" might inspire Doro Pesch to add some of those more aggressive moments to her next longplayer. Let's wait and see.

In the end it is the seven minutes long "Back on Northern Shores" that rounds off one of the best, no, the best Amon Amarth album.

As you may expect, the sound of "Jomsviking" is outstanding. Andy Sneap was in control of the production and gave Amon Amarth a differenciated and dynamic sound that support the band's melodic death metal as well as it creates an atmosphere that supports transfering the story in itself.

The vikings of Amon Amarth embarks on some thrilling new adventures with their new concept album that lifts the band to a next level by still respecting their roots, their trademarks and their sound. Well done and a successful next step.

CD review SPIRTUAL BEGGARS "Sunrise to Sundown"

Veröffentlicht am 13. März 2016 von Markus W. in Spiritual Beggars, Classic Rock, Vintage, Hardrock, News, CD Review, Rock, Amon Amarth

(8/10) Since 1992 the classic rock outlet of Arch Enemy guitar player Michael Amott is called Spiritual Beggars. Without having reached the same status as Arch Enemy, this quintet isn't a bunch of rookies starting up something.

Next to Amott also guys like Ludwig Witt (Grand Magus) and Per Wiberg (Kamchatka) are part of the band since many years, a team that got completed by Sharlee D'Angelo on bass and singer Apollo Papathanasio.

As we speak the guys release the curiously awaited new longplayer "Sunrise to Sundown" which is already the eighth chapter in the story of Spiritual Beggars.

In case you liked the former releases of the Swedes you will also appreciate what the guys burnt on this new disc. It's a logical continuation of Spiritual Beggars classic rock, enriched by some stoner rock as in songs like "Lonely Freedom". The whole album is rockin' pretty well and it comes with a cool vibe, something that just gives you a good time.

Connected to all this is the hammond organ that provides a warm and organic sound foundation. "Diamond Under Pressure" is a vintage style rocker that feels like a journey back to the 70's, almost a tribute to the legendary Jon Lord. But the song has more to offer. Apollo Papathanasio does a an excellent job behind the microphone and "Diamond Under Pressure" states pretty well what he can do with his voice.

A song you should have heard is "No Man's Land". It's a bluesy hardrocker that combines the bigger moments of Whitesnake with some Rainbow allusions. But what really stands out is the center part. Spiritual Beggars unveils the piano and together with the singing guitar the whole things reminds of Queen in their later days.

These more bombastic tunes need a counterpart and the puristic "You've Been Fooled" is one of those. The band exclude all decoration, something that results in a dirty classic rock track that is highly entertaining.

Spiritual Beggars used the time between 'sunrise and sundown' to create an album that combines musical craftmenship skill with passion and rock'n'roll. Thumbs up.

CD review HORRIZON "Dwelling within"

Veröffentlicht am 15. Juni 2015 von Markus W. in Horrizon, In Flames, Amon Amarth, Death Metal, Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, CD Review, News

(7/10) Horrizon was already founded ten years ago in Bad Kreuznach, Germany. The five-piece had to go through several line-up changes during their starting phase and had their first record deal in 2011. The debut was named "Time for revenge" and was released in 2012.

Now, three years later, Horrizon publishes their newest longplayer called "Dwelling within". Horrizon in these days is Julian Fischer (d), Ralf Strzalka (g), Franz Riemann (b), Martin Gerloff (v) and Peter Gedert on the second guitar.

Those five guys recorded eleven new songs for "Dwelling within", all melodic death metal numbers that are powerful and very entertaining. Horrizon finds the right mix between sonic brutality and melodies which add a certain catchiness to their tunes. My personal faves on "Dwelling within" are the title track, the merciless "From the abyss from hell" with its melodic middle section and the mighty "Labyrinth".

Not to forget that the new longplayer also includes the first ballad of Horrizon. "Whispering my name" is a soulful song that is quite different from the other ones. The tune builds up along the way but stays a silent one till the end. It marks a nice break halfway.

Having focussed on Northern mythology on "Time for revenge" the band decided to not continue with this theme on the new record. The shift was towards more openen topics - like 'obsession' that became the red thread on "Dwelling within".

Horrizon released with "Dwelling within" an album that is positioned somewhere between Amon Amarth (on songs like "The storm") and In Flames ("Fading away"). A mixture that works very well and if Horrizon will continue their journey with such an amount of passion they, step by step, come closer to the top of German metal. The band seems to have some potential, let's see whereto this will lead the guys.

CD review AMON AMARTH "Deceiver of the gods"

Veröffentlicht am 20. Juni 2013 von mwie in Heavy Metal, Amon Amarth

They are back. Swedens melo-death institution Amon Amarth from Stockholm released their new albums "Deceiver of the gods". The question is, if it can compete with the former albums. And yes, it can. "Deceiver of the gods" is a real and strong successor of "Surtur rising". Actually it's even better.

Already the title track, as the opener of the album, is a killer. Your head will start immediately to bang. Johan Hegg's voice is again powerful like in all the 20 years before. Well done. The five vikings continue with songs like "As like falls", "Father of the wolf" and "Shape shiver". You can get addicted to them. I think they will become classics in the live repertoire of the band. Another highlight is the epic "Hel". Johann gets support by Messiah Marcolin (ex-Candlemass). What a combination in this heavy and dramatic song. But it's not fair to just mention some song, since all of them are great. The album is like a punsh into your face.

Andy Sneap gave the album a perfect sound which reminded me a little bit to Kreator. It got a small thrash touch which fits very good.

This album rocks and I'm looking forward to the coming tour with Carcass.
