CD review OLIVA: "Raise the curtain"

What to say about Jon Oliva? The mastermind of Savatage and crucial part of TSO comes with his first real solo album „Raise the curtain“. The material is almost twenty years old. Sounds strange but it isn’t. The songs must be the highlight for all Savatage fans, since it is material written by Jon together with his brother Criss, who died far too early. Just have a look on the cover. The white guitar, the grand piano and the microphone - the Oliva brothers. The album actually shows how much we are missing Savatage (and Criss).

Compared to Savatage the sound is more classic rock and is more hardrock than heavy metal. But this is not meant in a bad way. It fits Jon. The first songs „Raise the curtain“ is almost an instrumental. It reminds me actually in certain parts to Queen. „Soul chaser“ starts directly with a strong beat. The songs catches you latest when Jon’s typical voice starts. „Ten times“ has even some jazzy elements with a horn section and develops into a song with also typical Savatage trademarks. This combination actually works pretty good. After the good „Father time“ the first ballad follows. „I know“ is a great ballad, without any cliche. It could fit perfectly on the „Streets“ album from Savatage. I love the song. „Big brother“ brings back the power. Straight forward with even some moments of Rainbow and Deep Purple. It is a heavy groover with geat keyboard parts. „Soldiers“ is another ballad supported by a flute. I could continue like this, because all the songs are great. It ends with the almost 7 minutes long epical „Can’t get away“.

For me this is the best album since many month. Thanks Jon for this album. Give us more of this stuff!
