CD review classic HEXX "Under the spell"

This is the review of one of the most under estimated bands and records. It is about "Under the spell" of Hexx. The album was released in 1986 and is the second record of the band. When I bought the vinyl (who still knows what this is?) I was 18 and the album blow me away. They released "Under the spell" when also a lot of other good bands started. Just think about Fates Warning, Armored Saint, Metal Church, Flotsam & Jetsam, Lizzy Borden, Liege Lord,...  Roadrunner Records did really a good job in those days.

The start of the record is already fantastic. How often does an album start with a guitar solo. "Hell rider" does. Then, after a few seconds the vocals start. Rough vocals bit with a lot of passion and harmonies. Even some genre typical screams are in there. The speed in "time of war" even increases and the songs becomes a great speed metal track. "Edge of death" is the first song on the album which takes out some tempo in the vers, but has a great break which leads to a very fast chorus. It's exactly those riffs and breaks which makes the album exciting from the beginning to the end. Partly the song reminds me a little bit to the first Flotsam & Jetsam album. The 10 tracks on the album give you know time to re-energize. The just grab your attention - 10 killers, no fillers. "Suicide" is another examples. It's a midtempo song with a great lead guitar. They reduced speed makes the song damn heavy and the pounding guitars are hammering the song into your brain. The same goes even more for "Midnight sun". A very slow song with a heavy riff. What a groove. But again, it is not fair to mention just some songs since they all are good.

Newer power metal bands never reached that level and even Hexx didn't reach it anymore. The question is why they didn't become more famous. Bad promotion? Bad management? I don't know. But it is worth to remind people to this fairly unkown classic. Just listen to it and enjoy it, esp. Yif you never heard somezhing from the band.

PS: Does anybody know what the band members are doing today? If yes please put it into the comments.
