FLOTSAM & JETSAM - recap European tour and line-up changes

Veröffentlicht am 19. März 2014 von Markus W. in Flotsam & Jetsam, Thrash Metal, News

Flotsam & Jetsam reflects on the latest tour together with Sepultura as headliner. Furthermore the band expains the latest chnges in the line-up. Read here the statement from the band:

"We would like to send out a huge thank you to the many fans and press that came out to support us on our tour with Sepultura. This tour was the largest european tour to date for Flotsam and Jetsam. Our main goal is to get connected to all of you, shake your hands, look you in the eyes and let you know how much we appreciate you. You are the life blood of music.
As you know we released a complete reproduction of No Place for Disgrace this year. This was so we could present the album the way it was intended to heard. Many of you had great comments about this and that confirmed our decision to get this done."

"After completion of the 2013 tour with Testament in the US, Edward Carlson was no longer able to tour due to physical issues that would require back and neck surgery to possibly correct. We will miss our comerade and wish him well on his next adventure. Steve Conley has been officially recruited to fill the spot. Having played with David Ellifson(Megadeth) in F5 we are confident in his ability to hold the spot with integrity.
Jason Ward's departure happened after the tracking of Ugly Noise. Jason had spent nearly 16 years in Flotsam and decided to stay at home with his new family and career. He was and is one of the strongest personalities in the Flotsam catalog of players. We have all had a turn on the sidelines, we will miss his participation on the road and his whitty humor. Shorty after the Testament tour in 2013 Micheal Spencer took the helm ad bassist. He was the first bassist to replace Newsted in 1987 formerly of Sentinel Beast. He was a part of the writing of No Place for Disgrace in 1987 and was on our first tour with Megadeth in the US and Europe. With that history it made perfect sense that No Place should be redone. You can hear him on the reproduction of NPFD."

The current line up is as follows:
Eric A.K. - Vocals
Michael Gilbert - Guitar
Kelly D. Smith - Drums
Michael Spencer - Bass (First bassist to replace Jason Newsted)
Steve Conley - Guitars (Formerly of F5)

CD review L.R.S. "Down to the core"

Veröffentlicht am 18. März 2014 von Markus W. in L.R.S., AOR, Hardrock, Hardline, CD Review, News

(8/10) When I got the CD from L.R.S. I couldn't place it since I haven't heard from them earlier. But after checking more details things became clearer. L.R.S. is the band of Tommy La Verdi (v), Josh Ramos (g) and Michael Shotton (d). All of them have already a musical history in bands like Hardline, The Storm and 21 Guns. So we have experienced musicians - and with Alessandro Del Vecchio also a very experienced producer. By the way, Del Vecchio also contributed with keyboard part, hammond organ and backing vocals. All this should give you already an idea about the music those guys recorded.

Indeed, "Down to the core" contains twelve tracks of finest AOR rock. Not that the band turns the rocking world upside down. What they do is stating an example that rock music with roots in the 80's is still alive. Names like Journey and Bad English popped up in my mind when I lestened to the songs.

The opener "Our love to stay" shows, that the band really rocks. The same goes for AOR pearls like "Never surrender" and "Shadow of a man". Rocking guitars are supported by tight keyboards. Catchy melodies and hooks makes it easy for each listener to get into the songs. Ballads can't be missing on an AOR album. Of course those 'romantic' tunes are also part of "Down to the core". "Universal cry" is one of them and "I will find my way" is another example. Good songs, no doubt, but I appreciate the rocking moments much more. Fortunately there are a lot of them on "Down to the core". Not only the earlier mentioned once, but also the title track shows that AOR doesn't have to be only sugar sweet. The fast "Waiting for love" proves this as well. One small bad thing with this song. I think it would have deserved to rock till the end. The same goes for the closer "Not one way to give". This would have been a clear statement at the end.

Conclusion: L.R.S. produced with "Down to the core" an AOR highlight for this year. The right soundtrack for a car ride with your convertable into the warm spring sunrays.

CD review SINBREED "Shadows"

Veröffentlicht am 18. März 2014 von Markus W. in Sinbreed, Speed Metal, News, CD Review, Power Metal

(8/10) German speed/power metal band Sinbreed is back with a new album. It's called "Shadows" and follows the band's debut "When worlds collide" which was released four years ago.

Eventhough the band has so far just two albums they are not totally new in buisness. They started already in the 2000's as Neoshine, before the renamed the band to Sinbreed in 2008. Next to that the band of founder Flo Laurin (guitar/keyboard) brings experienced musicians around the table. Or better said: into the sudio and on stage. The hard punch on drums comes from Blind Guardian member Frederik Ehmke, Marcus Siepen (also Blind Guardian) adds the guitar while the vocals are done by Herbie Langhans, which you might know from Seventh Avenue. I like Langhans' smoky vocals since they are a bit rougher. He reminds me a bit to Biff Byford from Saxon.

"Shadows" got a crystal clear and powerful sound which fits good to the band. Markus Teske (Symphony X, Vanden Plas) has done a good job.

The songs are jawdropping good. Superb riffs meets catchy melodies which are combined with speed and heavines. This becomes already very clear with the opener "Bleed". Two of my other faves are "Black death" and the galloping "Broken wings". But actually all songs are really great and worth to listen to. The album is a 50 minutes full speed entertainment, which I can definitely recommend.

"Shadows' became an superb speed-/power metal record and is a logical continuation of the debut. Well done.

Live review VENGEANCE in De Boerderij, Zoetermeer, Holland, 15.03.2014

Veröffentlicht am 15. März 2014 von Markus W. in Vengeance, Hardrock, Live Review, News

What is better on a Saturday night than watching a rock'n'roll show? This was the thought of all the rock fans who came together in De Boerderij in Zoetermeer to see Vengeance.

But before the Dutch hardrock veterans entered the stage it was time for the opening act. It was the John Emmen Band. John Emmen, isn't that the drummer of Vengeance? Yes, indeed. But he also has his own band. They have their own songs and merge those with some coversongs. I think, that they did a good job as an opening act and I was surprised about the vocal range of the their female singer. She was pretty amazing.

But of course almost everybody came to see the Dutch hardrock institution. It was a few minutes before ten when Vengeance started their show. No intro, no real lights out. The band just started to play.

After the last album "Piece of cake" I was curious how the band sounds live. The album had some real highlights, but I think also some less strong tunes. After I have seen their show last night I must say that Vengeance is still a live band. 90 minutes long they spread pure energy, entertainment and they had obviously fun with what they are doing - playing awesome hardrock songs.

One important factor in this dominant live presence is without any doubt Leon Goewie. This guy was one and a half hour in action. There was no moment when he really stood still. Maybe he slowed down a bit during the bluesy ballad "Back to square one" from the "Piece of cake" album. Next to the exception he was like a dervish; walking from left to right, from the back to the front. He was simply everywhere. And with his facial expressions he was the perfect host of the rock'n'roll party - without any arrogance and star behaviour. Cool and I think a lot of singers and frontmen from younger bands can learn a lot from him and his passion. Also his voice is still like in the old days and the guy seems to be in good shape too.

But also the band played tight and transfered a lot of power. The bass solo from Barend Courbois, some of you might know him from Blind Guardian, was gorgeous. Normally too long solos sucks in a live show, but Courbois actually added another highlight to the show. Also lead guitarist Timo Somers (Delain), son of the former Vengeance guitarist Jan Somers, did a good job. The guitar was screaming and his stage performance was like it needs to be. Well done.

When it comes to the setlist we have to state that it was a well chosen mix between old and new. Especially the new songs gained compared to the studio recordings. "Sandman" and "Raintime" sound much stronger than on CD/vinyl. Also "Soul collector" from the corresponend album fittet perfect into the rock'n'roll show and was in line with the old classics of Vengeance. Tracks like "Take it or leave it", "Rock'n'Roll shower" and the surpassing "Arabia" must be part of a Vengeance gig - and thet sounded perfect. It was party feeling pure.

After the final note faded you could see a lot of happy faces in the audience and people went home with a satisfied smile. Isn't that what music is standing for? It was a 90 minutes massage for the ears.

I wonder after this evening, why the band hasn't more shows in planning yet. I hope this will come, because it is great entertainment combined with excellent hardrock. If the band comes close to your town, than grap the opportunity and go there. You will not be disappointed.

Setlist Vengeance:

  1. Sandman/Train
  2. Wait until the sun goes down
  3. Take it or leave it
  4. May heaven strike me down
  5. Cross in the rain
  6. Planet zilch
  7. She is the woman
  8. Take me to the limit
  9. Dance dance
  10. Raintime
  11. Back to square one
  12. Dream world
  13. Soul collector
  14. Arabia
  15. Down and out
