CD review BATTLE BEAST "Bringer of Pain"

(8/10) Finnish metal outfit Battle Beast sticks to their pattern for realising new records. It’s every second year that a new longplayer from melodic metal band sees the light of day and since “Unholy Savior” came out in 2015 it’s 2017 being the year for the fourth album. And here it is.

“Bringer of Pain” is the name of disc and it’s the first one with their new guitarist Joona Bjorkroth who joined in 2016. The new longplayer come with 10 songs, each of them fulfilling the expectations of fans. With 40 minutes play time the record isn’t too long. It’s more spot-on and for sure without any filler.

Battle Beast created 10 hymns that are very melodic and catchy without missing out on heavy riffs and a powerful rhythm section. Pyry Vikki and Erer Siplia are the engine of this vibrant metal album that captures the entire width of melodic metal and hardrock.

One of the highlights on the album is the Nightwish inspired “Beyond the Burning Sky’, a true melodic rocker per excellence. With “Bastard Son of Odin” the Finns come closer to Sabaton, a moment when heaviness meets melody and a galloping beat. “Bastard Son of Odin” belongs to the harder songs on “Bringer of Pain” while the other extreme is entitled “Dancing with the Beast”. This tune is the catchiest one on the album with keyboards being very much in the forefront. This gives the title the expression of a harder Abba-cover and if you like it or not,  you can’t escape from this melody. It sticks to your mind and doesn’t let loose.

“King For a Day” is built in a similar way and since Battle Beast combines melodic elements with partly Mötley Crue inspired riffs things never fade away in clicheful no-mans-land. “King for a Day” also shows that lyrics are also important to the band. Coincident or not, the lyrics for this song fit very much into today’s reality.

All in all, I was positive surprised about the quality of this melodic metal album. “Bringer of Pain” will be satisfying for fans of the band as well as it can act as a door opener for new fans discovering this Finnish metal outfit.
