(7/10) This album is a positive surprise. Duskwood is into stoner rock that's not only focusing on slow riffs from the desert. These guys also push the pedal to the metal which the hardrock, sometimes even metal aspect of their sound. The five-piece band is hailing from Somerset, UK and the guys formed Duskwood in 2011. After a first EP hit the shelves in 2013 it's this year that's the one with the debut seeing the light of day. "Desert Queen" is the name of the disc that features ten songs.

Looking on the name of the opener, "Obelisk", you might expect a solid piece of music, which this song also stands for. But it's also a tune that is fast and pushing which means that it's rather agile than steady. All in all a good start.

"Titan" might not belong to the titans of metal but it's again a well-crafted tune that comes with a higher metal percentage. "Church of Misery" slows it down and creates the sound of a Fata Morgana, including all the despair of this fatal illusion. The title track is placed quite late on the tracklist, showing the band in slow pace too.

"Desert Queen" is an album that is build on stoner rock with some metal cross-references being included. I like this longplayer since it sounds fresh and contemporary by still being basic and heavy. It's not that we never heard this kind of music before. It's just the way the guys approached it - with passion and dedication. Thumbs up.
