(6/10) A bison stand for power, freedom and independence. It's these might animals that inspired three Italian guys while they were thinking about a name for their new band. Mr. Bison was the final result of this process and "Asteroid" is the new album of the trio.
Mr. Bison plays stoner metal with an psychedelic touch and it feels like Monster Magnet has been a crucial source of inspiration. Songs like "Black Crow", the opener, are full of cross-references.
But Mr. Bison has a wider range to offer. "Full Moon" comes with an embedded horn section, "Burn the Road" has a more classic rock based approach and "Cannibal" is a more rude rocker that has a pretty cool groove. "Hell" instead, brings back the stoner vibe combined with an hardrock inspired chorus.
What I miss with "Asteroid"is the sonic stampede that you expect from the 'Bisons'. The songs on this longplayer aren't bad, but it feels a bit like a band that's in search of their own sound and their own identity. That's why the album sounds partly fragmented which makes it harder for the listener.
No bad record but also no smasher.
