CD review PORT NOIR "Any Way the Wind Carries"

(8/10) Port Noir sounds French, but the guys are Swedish. This trio comes from Södertälje, outside of Stockholm, and Port Noir stands for drummer Andreas Wiberg, singer and guitarist Love Andersson and Andreas Hollstrand on guitar and backing vocals.

The roots of Port Noir are back in 2011 when the three guys found some common ground. They started with a first song, accompanied by a video which brought In Flames singer Anders Fridén on the agenda. He signed the band for his label Razzia Records, followed by the band's debut called "Port".

Now, 3 years later, the new Port Noir album is in the starting blocks. "Any Way the Wind Carries" is the name and the question is: what's so special with this trio?

I think it is this mixture of wistfulness, rock and metal that sounds really interesting. I was thinking about bands to compare Port Noir with. I didn't succeed in this. The band that comes closest to the sound of this Swedish trio is Tool. Some of the vocal melodies and intonations are similar to the guys from Los Angeles, but I think that Port Noir's portfolio is wider than just this.

If I take "Black From the Ink" as an example - the song is build on a simple but effective riff which is the general base for this mid tempo number. On top of this you'll hear the intensive and expressionist vocals of Andersson. The way he sings is not only performing some lyrics. It feels like the guy unveiling his soul in these tracks.

Another song, same story. "Fur, Rye" is kept more silence, at least in the beginning, and the vocals will give you the shivers.

"The Sleep" instead will lead to some insomnia. It's another highlight on "Any Way the Wind Carries" with, again, a Tool based melody line and, partly, some modern metal riffing.

One of the most advanced tracks on the band's second album is the closer "The Oak Crown". This number, no, this composition has an almost epical depth. The song never get's really loud, but it's this underlaying intensity that just keeps going.

I have missed the first album of the band. The more I'm impressed of the second longplayer. In case you missed the debut too, check out "Any Way the Wind Carries". You will not regret it.
