(6/10) Lancaster, PA-based From Ashes To New released their first disc, which was an EP called "From Ashes to New", in 2013. A second EP is in the starting blocks. "Downfall" is the name of the this release and it comes with four new tracks.
From Ashes To New plays modern metal that is infiltrated by rap and and rock.
"Downfall" is the opner which is a riff-based rocker that combines metal guitars with rap vocals and a catchy chorus. It doesn't sound too bad but it's also not thrilling either. "Lost and Alone" doesn't change this impression. Melodies are increasing and the tune sounds like Linkin Park without getting close to their quality level.
"Land of Make Believe" brings rap even more into the forefront. It's a very commercial track that is in my point of view a bit too trivial and predictable. And if you ever wondered how Eminem would sound if he would add some more guitars to his sound, than you should listen to "Through It All".
All in all From Ashes To New don't reinvent the wheel. Their modern metal/rap crossover sounds OK, but the band also plays safe. The amount of innovation and brave steps is very limited and "Dowfall" doesn't come with any surprises.
In case you're interested in good crossover of metal and rap/hiphop, it's still the "Judgement Night" soundtrack that is the measure of all things.
