(8/10) Actually metalcore isn't my most favorite metal genre and that's why I was hesitating a bit when I got the new release from German Callejon.

Even though the band scored already quite some successes I never digged deeper into their songs and sound. Anyhow, the new live release arrived and curiosity brought the disc into my player.

After having heard the live album I must say that I was impressed by the density and energy of the nineteen titles that have been played during the recorded concert in Cologne.

This live disc thrills the listener. It is amazing how much of the raw power, spread by the band during their show, could be captured on this album. Callejon tear down the house.

The guys are playing metalcore, but to my surprise their sound, esp. on this live release, contains also a lot of thrash metal elements too. It was more than once that I was reminded to the mighty Kreator when I listened to "Live in Köln". Songs like "Das Lied macht mich betroffen" and "Snake Mountain" sound like the Ruhrpott four-piece with German lyrics. Pretty cool.

Tracks like "1000 PS" feel like nomen et omen. Those songs are coming with a hell of a lot of horsepower. Next to the own compositions the guys performed a cover version of the Die Ärzte song "Schrei nach Liebe" which was kept closer to the original version, but put into a new, much heavier, context. And the lyrics are more relevant than ever in these days.

The only downer is the drum solo. There are very little moments when drum solos are really something breath-taking. In the case of Callejon it looks out of place. It's actually boring and takes out the vibe of the rest of the show.

However, it's almost impossible to escape from the this energizer. This record is a sonic steamhammer.

If you haven't counted Callejon to one of your favorites you still should give this album a fair chance. You might be as surprised as I have been - and I seriously like this disc.
