(8/10) There are some records that you listen to for the first time and you're caught by their sound. "The Sheltering Day" from Dead Soul is such a longplayer.

In case you haven't from the band earlier, it is a musical collaboration of Anders Landelius (v/g) and multiinstrumentalist Niels Nielsen; a name you might have heard already when it was about Swedish occult rockers from Ghost. It was Nielsen who was involved in the production of e.g. "Infestissumam".

"The Sheltering Sky" is the second release of this creative duo and it follows the debut from 2013. Dead Soul is thrilling in a way that you can't put their sound into common genres and styles. The music of the two guys isn't metal but it is exciting rock music that brings together many elements.

The label info says: "Think Nick Cave meets NIN meets Johnny Cash". I guess that this describes the sound of Dead Soul pretty good. The opener "Until the Last Breath" reflects actually all of those three influences while tracks like "Abyss" puts more focus on electronic elements which gives the tune a dark and baleful expression.

But THE song on "The Sheltering Day" is called "Dirt Road". Listening to this masterpiece sends cold shivers up and down your spine. It's a song that comes with so much emotional depth that it's hard not to get caught by it. There is no tune that can compete with Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt", but Dead Soul wrote with this piano based ballad a number that comes from an intesity point-of-view quite close. And knowing that "Hurt" was composed by Trent Reznor (NIN) we can conclude that we come to full circle when it is about different styles in Dead Soul's music.

"The Sheltering Day" is an outstanding rock album that has many exciting moments. And in case you still doubting, listen to "Dirt Road".
