(6/10) It's showtime. Geoff Tate and Queensryche are releasing new records this fall. Tate is the first one publishing a new disc under the banner of Operation Mindcrime. The ex-Queensryche singer could gather some well known names sailing with him under this flag - Dave Ellefson and Simon Wright, just to mention two of them.

But name dropping isn't what the whole thing is about. It's the music that counts, esp. while knowing about the history of preaks and lows of the iconic singer.

First of all; if anybody hoped for a step back towards the early Queensryche days you can stop reading here. Tate continues on his individual journey through a mix of alternative metal with prog- and rock elements.

There is one exemption. "Re-inventing the future" let the "Operation Mindcrime"-flame blaze for a second. It's by far the best song on the album. A tune that is also OK is towards the end. "Kicking in the door" is a balladic anthems with a lot of feel. Not too bad. Also "Burn" and "The Fall" works quite well eventhough being far away from heyday.

The rest of the tracks aren't real rock or metal pearls. It's just not what I connect with Tate's unique voice.

Songs like the confusing "Life or Death" don't work and the scattered "The stranger" with a heavily downtuned guitar is weird (or highly creative).

Unfortunately "The key" keeps the direction of the recent Tate releases. Considering that this album is the first one out of a trilogy we can expect two prolongations of this individual Geoff Tate journey. Don't know if this is good or bad. Let's just take it as a fact. I think it's sad that Geoff Tate doesn't make more out of his voice.

So let's wait what Queensryche will come with. Hopefully they manage to serve an inspiring metal meal. We will get an answer in October.
