It seems to be 'Kiss time' this summer. Within one week ex-Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley visited the Netherlands as well as his former band mates from Kiss (next week in Amsterdam).

Frehley made the start by playing a show in De Boerderij in Zoetermeer. It was the second show in Holland after having played a gig two days earlier in Amsterdam.
But before the guitar maniac started with his set it was the task of Belgium Diablo Blvd. to warm up the audience. That worked very well even though their modern metal didn't really fit to Frehley's/Kiss' hardrock. It was their powerful sound and the hard riffs that brought some movement into the crowd. As frontman Alex Agnew stated "It's our job to warm you up and I had guys not doing their job". Diablo Blvd., and esp Agnew with his talenet to entertain people, definitely did their job and the 35 minutes have been a good start into the night...and it became warm in the venue.

After a 45 minutes long break it was time for Ace Frehley and band. Looking on the amount of Kiss shirts in the crowd the expectations for some Kiss songs has been tangible. And Ace Frehley delivered. Playing through a set that was a mix of his solo albums and several Kiss classics was exactly what was wished by the people. The crowd went crazy during hits like "Detroit rock city" and "Cold gin". Those songs are written for eternity and create the same enthusiasm as when the have been published decades ago. Also some tunes from Kiss' "Ace Frehley" album have been highly appreciated by the fans - esp. the bouncer "Rip it out". This rockin' firework rounded off the 90 minutes long show.

Besides the unique songs it was also the stage performance of the four guys that is worth a word. Next to the master himself it was Richie Scalet on the second guitar, Chris Wyse on the four string and Scot Coogan (d) that are Frehelys' band mates right now - each of them with a lot of stage experience and real rock'n'roll animals. They have been all over the stage and sometimes, as Scarlet did, even further than that. One of the greatest moments of the show was when he gave a kid that was standing next to the stage a pick. The young guy was so surprised that he wasn't even sure if he can take the pick. Pure entertainment and a generation bridge in one.

Even though it is Ace Frehely's name on the posters he also gave enough space to his band mates. Each of them also did the vocals for one of the tracks and they got enough space for some solo moment too. The bass solo from Wyse was actually quite impressive.

When it comes to the gimmicks - yes, those have been there as well. The smoking guitar from Frehley was as well part of the show as the one with the blinking spots.

All in all it was great rock'n'roll night in De Boerderij and I'm curious if Kiss can top this next week. I guess that if you want to get the real Kiss hardrock vibe you should go for Ace and if you want to have the big entertainment you should go for Kiss. Let's see.
