CD review LEPROUS "The congregation"

(8/10) Norwegian prog rockers from Leprous have a new album out in the record shops. It is called "The congregation", number five in the bands discography. It follows the 2013 release "Coal" and it's in my opinion the best one the guys have released so far.

What I like with "The congregation" is the melange of different moods. Leprous managed to write songs that get under the skin. The eleven songs are on the one hand dark and melancholic by being easy approachable on the other side. Each tune has a certain catchiness that never becomes pushy.

"The price", that's the name of the opener. The tune is a sphereful one that comes with big soundscapes and embedded electro-elements.

The gloomy vibe I was talking about comes back in numbers like "Third law"; a piece of music with an underlaying melancholy.

Another highlight is called "Triumphant" that reminded me to Tool in certain parts while "Red" sounds partially fragile with a touching expression. Also to mention is "Slave". It's a powerful song that has a very oppressive expression. A tune between desperation and hope. In the end "Slave" becomes a heavy song that turns almost into death metal before returning to the original pattern. It's those twists which makes the longplayer so diverse. It's those fascinating moments for the listener that provides the listener with a 66 minutes long sonic journey.

Compared to "Slave", the following "Moon" is an almost swinging tune that has a certain ease. It comes with a big melody and belongs to the most catchy ones on the album. A cool counterpart to "Slave".

Such an album also screams for an excellent production. It was Jens Bogren (Opeth, Devin Townsend, Katatonia) who was the mainman behind the sound and he gave "The congregation" the space this music needs. Well done.

"The congregation" is a definite prog rock highlight of 2015. It is an album that develops over time and with each round in your CD player you will find out more details. Excellent music.
