CD review CARE OF NIGHT "Connected"

(7/10) Five Swedish guys decided to team-up to a band and write some music. Actually it was guitarist Jonathan Carlemar and keyboarder Kristofer von Wachenfeldt that initiated the band. Thye gave their band the name Care Of Night and "Connected" is the name of the debut. The first longplayer follows a four track EP which they have released already in 2013.

The Kalmar-based band plays AOR / melodic rock which is to its full extend reflected on "Connected". The focus is on big melodies which are really catchy. The songs come with great hooklines that stick immediatley. Just like candy. When I heard the album I had to think about the US-series "Paper dolls" (some of you might have seen some episodes) in which John Waite played himself. The music of Care Of Night reflects eaxctly this flashy atmosphere that the series transported as well.

Keyboards build the frame for the songs. Sometimes the guitar takes the lead and the very melodic vocal lines makes each track a listening experience.

In total the album comes with ten songs. The start of the album is quite exciting. "Cassandra", the opener, is rocking very well and spreads pure energy. Also "Heart belongs", one of the faster songs, has the guitars very much in focus, before the keyboards get more dominant in "Those words". One of the best songs on the album is "Please remember". The tune has an irresistable groove; regardless if in the verse, the bridge or the chorus. But also the acoustic closer "Say you will" belongs to the remarkable tunes on "Connected". The ballad is somewhere between the acoustic hits from Mr.B ig and Extreme by still sounding fresh and modern. What also stands out in this song are the capabilities of singer Calle Schoenberg. He does a pretty good job; not only during this number.

Next to those pretty good AOR numbers there are also some weaker tracks on the album. "Say a prayer" feels a bit breathless and "Unify" isn't that thrilling either.

But besides that "Connected" is a good AOR album that is no disappointment for fans of this genre. In general the songs are well done and the production supports the music with volume and energy. The only point of critic is, that things are quite prediactable and the real surprises are missing. Buy maybe those aren't needed anyhow. A strong debut.
