(7/10) Wayfarer is a four-piece band from Denver, Colorado. They are fairly new and started under the banner of Wayfarer in 2011. After a first demo in 2011 the band released their first album "Children of the iron age". The record was already published in summer 2014 by the band themselves. In the meantime Wayfarer found with Prosthetic Records a new label and the debut was re-released.

Wayfarer is into (melodic) black metal, with a certain folk touch, but also some more classic metal components. It's not that Wafarer invented a new sub-genre in metal, but I also didn't expect that. They published an album with songs that show enough quality  and are highly entertaining.

Four songs stand out - already based on their length. "Forest ash by dawn", "Towards mountains", "The elemental" and "Skysong" are between 10-15 minutes long black metal anthems - kept in mid-speed and sometimes changing into slow epical tunes. It takes a lot to write those songs and I must say that all four are well-crafted ones. In my opinion they might be a bit too long or they could have had a few more unexpected twists. Those would have made them even more exciting. Esp. "Towards mountains" stays too long in the same pattern and after 5 minutes I had the feeling that it could come to an end.

One of may favorites on the album is the title track "Children of the iron age". With only eight minutes it belongs to the shorter ones. Starting with a heavy riff the mid-pace song has an interesting middle-part when acoustic guitars take over for a while. It fits the vibe of the track very well. Towards the end the powerful riffs are coming back to end the songs as it started - energetic and gloomy.

"Children of the iron age" is a good debut album of a young band. Eventhough the debut shows things that could have been done better, Wayfarer has the potential for some additional and powerful metal records.
