CD review MYSTERY "From dusk till dawn"

(5/10) Hardrock from Australia is not unusual. AC/DC and Airbourne, just to mention two, are from down under and have proven that Australia rocks. Mystery are from Melbourne and they are enthusiastic about hardrock with a strong sleaze touch. Think about bands like Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard and Poison. Now you know what to expect.

The guys released their debut "2013" in, yes, 2013 and the new longplayer "From dusk till dawn" has been published a few days ago. Compared to the debut the four-piece band has made a step forward. The songs sound a bit tighter than on their first album. But there are still some step to take when it comes to songwriting. Sometimes the songs sound unfinished and 'bumpy'. The Poison-like opener is a good example for this. The song doesn't want to stick. It misses the catchyness and the hooks that makes it really fun.

Some other tracks are better. "Fight for you" is a pretty OK hardrocker and also the pounding "Die another die" is a good one. But still, they don't come close to the above mentioned bands.

In average there is quite still some space to improve. Pure enthustiasm isn't enough. Compared to a lot of other excellent releases Mystery has to really take an effort to close the gap.
