(9/10) Retro rock is trendy in these days. More and more bands discover the sound of the 60's/70's and make it their own. The result is an amazing amount of bands which combines the early day rock feeling with the modern sound of today.

Rival Sons from California is one of those bands. Probabaly one of the most successful and best ones. Already the predecessor "Head down" was a big milestone in the band's history. The record could show chart entires in 10 European countries. Next to that, Rival Sons became Classic Rock's "Breakthrough artist" in 2012.

That means that the expectations have been quite high, when it comes to the new album. I could imagine that this also put some pressure on the four guys from Long Beach, California. And they succeeded in meeting the expectations. "Great Western Valkyire" includes ten great classic rock influenced songs - all recorded and produced LCS studios in Nashville, Tennessee. The sound of the album is fresh, warm and organic. Exactly what this kind of music needs and deserves. Well done.

"Good things" is one of my faves on the album. The tune has a huge blues expression which I really like. Next to that the melody is awesome and you could get addicted to the song. Next to that "Great Western Valkyrie" presents also tracks that remind you to The Doors and Led Zeppelin. "Good luck" is one of those. What I appreciate with the song is the quite relexed The-Doors-alike verse, which explodes in the chorus. Classic rock at it's best. The first single release of the new album is called "Open my eyes". It's a very cool groove monster which you can't resist. It's the hypnotic beat which puts a spell on you. The longest track on the album is at the same time the last one too. "Destination on course" is an epical tune which starts quite silent and the vocals from Jay Buchanan sound almost a bit fragile. But also the lead guitar by Scott Holiday is just awesome throughout the entire track. A treat for your ears. The tune slowly builds up and it could become Rival Sons "Stairway to heaven". Yes, maybe the comparision is a bit out of scale, but only a bit. However, the closer is a thrilling track. Just listen to it.

"Great Western Valyrie" is a must for all fans of blues based classic rock. It's an album for the older generation to think back in time and it's for the younger generation who wants to explore new/old sounds. Can't be done much better.
