CD review NIGHT RANGER "High road"

(8/10) Can you still remember "Sister Christian"? Yes, right - the hit from Night Ranger which went up to the fifth place in the US charts at that time. This was in 1984. In the meantime we are 30 years further down the road, but Night Ranger is still around. The band with the guitar duo Jack Blades and Brad Gillis worked on their new record called "High road". It's their eleventh studio album in all these years. The main reason for this is the fact, that the band actually didn't exist anymore during the 90's. But they are back since a few years and that's good. They might not reach the huge successes like in the beginning of their cerreer, but they still write and release good songs.

In total the album comes with eleven tracks which are somewhere between hardrock, AOR and rock. I would say: typical stadium rock.

"Knock knock never stop"  and "Rollin' on" are cool hardrock song somewhere between Kiss and Aerosmith. The guitars are in focus and the tunes definitely rock. Another solid track is "X generation", eventhough I think that the hook in the bridge isn't the best. The catchy "Hang on" does a much better job. The smooth rocker comes with a straight forward guitar and a groove ryhthm. A highlight that stands out a bit is the bass- and rhythm-focussed "St.Bartholomews". It feels a bit more complex than the rest of the material, but has a killer groove. Doubtless, there is a ballad needed on the album too. And it's there. "Only for you only" is the name of it. It's an OK one, but it can't reach the band's anthem "Sister Christian".

This brings me actually to the weaker composition which are on the record. The title track is a bit too sweet for me. It's an AOR song which we have heard already a couple of time before. This leads to limited excitement. Also "Brothers" is a bit too much cliche. It feels a bit too unemotional for an emotional track.

But in the end the positive things predominate and Night Ranger deliver what they can best. Catchy and highly melodic rock songs which are made for convertable car rides with your girlfriend. If this is what you're looking for you are safe with "High road".
