CD review DEATHSTARS "The perfect cult"

(8/10) Ach ja, what should I say about Deathstars? The band from Strömstad, Sweden releases their fourth full length album in these days. So, what is new with the "The prefect cult", which is name of the newest publication.

Actually nothing is new. Yeah, maybe the songs got even more pop elements than ever. The distinctive riff are still there, but the keyboards got even more attention compared to the other releases. But for the rest everything stays the same. This might be good for the fans of the band, but at a certain moment it also could become annoying too. Not everybody is like AC/DC and Status Quo. Funny enough that I still like the Deathstars. Eventhough I think that their image with the pale faces and the uniforms is a bit childish it's the music which does the job.

So what about the music on "The perfect cult"? It's again the mix of simple, but heavy Rammstein-like riff, the very dominant keyboard melodies and the deep and dark vocals from Whiplasher. It's dark rock pure and it reminds a lot to the Sisters Of Mercy. Already this shows, that the Deathstars don't make really new stuff, but they managed to create an own sound by combining existing elements.

My favorite songs on the album are e.g. "All the devil's toys". The song shows some obvious Sisters Of Mercy parallels - I just say "More". But since the gothic rock pioneers from England don't write songs like this anymore it's a good thing that Deathstars fill this gap. The opener is another song to mention. "Explode" comes with a powerful Rammstein riff while the keyboard melody reminds even to Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the silence". But again, those tunes aren't that much different from the other tracks. Therefore we can say that the rest is also quite catchy and easy approachable. And this is probably the main success factor of the band from Sweden.

Conclusion: Nothing new from Deathstars. Nothing special from Deathstars. But I still like the music of Deathstar. God knows why.
