CD review SMASH INTO PIECES "Unbreakable"

(6/10) Smash Into Pieces are already quite big in Sweden. They started in 2008 and have released their new album "Unbreakable" a few days ago. The five guys from Örebro play modern rock in the broadest sense of the word. Certain parts remind me to Alter Bridge, while some other section contain a bit of Nickelback and here and there you find a bit of Linkin Park as well. That's playing it safe.

Songs like the grooving melodic opener "Colder" and the rocking "Crash and burn" just stick in your mind. The catchy hooklines do their job. With "Here to stay" the album also has its ballad. A good song which could get quite some radio airplay. Chris Sörbye can show the total range of his voice which is pretty impressing. Sometimes, like in "Heroes (as we are)" the modern touch is underlined by screams, which I think are not really necessary and feel a bit misplaced. I think that the band doesn't need this to underline a 'bad guy rockstar image'.

Nevertheless, the album leaves me with mixed feelings. Why is this the case? If I look on the music there is nothing wrong with it. If I look on the production - nothing wrong with it too, eventhough the album sounds quite polished. But there is this feeling that something is missing. It's the soul. For me the album is too much 'dressed for success'. It sounds too designed and a bit like from a casting show. Therefore I was not surprised that they actually participated in  "Sweden's got talent" which is such a show. This is actually a pity since I think that the musically capabilities of the band is pretty high.

Since music for me has much to do with emotions, good and bad, I can't give more than 6 points. I think that there is much more potential in the band than what they show on this very mainstream and success oriented record. Maybe next time.
