(8/10) Female fronted metal is popular and gets quite some attention in these days. Bands like The Gathering, Nightwish and Within Temptation can probabaly be seen as the godfathers of this genre. But in the last 1-2 years its more and more the second generation which gets into the spotlight too. One of those bands is Delain. Also from The Netherlands the band was founded by keyboarder and ex-Within Temptation member Martijn Westerhold. Starting as a project, Delain became over time a band which released in the meantime 4 records and achieved a certain status. Now it's time for their new record.
Two years after releasing "We are the others" it's time to listen to the new disc called "The human contradiction". After a few listening sessions I can say that it is the best and most mature album Delain has published till now
The opener "here come the vulture" is already a highlight. Starting with Charlotte's great voice, a musical clock and piano the song gets a first break with a heavy riff. The track spreads a gloomy atmosphere, which is supported by heavy guitar parts. Those are reminding to Rammstein (of course not he vocals) in some sections. It's a real heavy start into the album which finds its continuation in "Your body is a battleground". Compared to these 'dark' and heavy songs "Stardust" feels almost like a swinging tune. With "My masqurade" the band becomes very catchy. The song has proabably the biggest pop apeal from all the nine tracks. Not the it's a one, but it feels alomst a bit trivial compared to the other ones on the album. "Tell me, mechanist" lives on a nice melody and the interplay between Charlotte's clean vocals and the raw male part while "Army of dolls" with its 'disco beat' in the beginning starts quite unusual. Next to that the songs is a typical melodic Delain song which shows a lot of parallels to the latest release from Martijn's brother's band - Within Temptations - without copying them. All in all Delain has a bit harder songs and less pop elements in their tunes.
When it comes to the sound of "The human contradiction" I have to say that it is powerful and warm. Keyboards create a foundation together with a solid rhythm group which allows the guitars to shine. Combined with the awesome voice of Charlotte the result is highly entertaining metal music.
In my point of view Delain released with "The human contradiction" a very good new album. Normally the saying is that the third album decides on the future success. I think with Delain it's the fourth album and it looks like a glorious future.
