(7/10) Mainz, Germany - the capitol of German heavy metal? Not that I know. But that doesn't mean that there are no cool bands coming from there. One of those bands is Purify. The four guys play straight forward thrash metal. They mention bands like Exodus as their faves and this is also reflected in the new songs. In total there are 13 smashers on the album and they are all like a punch into your face. They quartet creates a dense wall of guitars eventhough they have only one guitarist. Amazing also the vocals done by Tobias Mönch. I can see/hear a lot of parallels with Paul Baloff. His screetchy vocals fit perfect to thrash metal and the band can be happy to have such a shouter. The rhythm section with Michael Edele (b) and Ralf Winkmann(d), who was replaced end of 2013, give each song the right drive and pushes the band forward.
"Sic Transit Gloria Mundi" was already released in summer 2013, but came to my ears just a few days ago. I was quite glad when I heard the album for the first time since songs like "Gunslinger" and "Old men's wrath" are just great thrash metal songs. Headbanging stuff per excellance. And with "Ravager" the band moves partly even a bit towards Pro-Pain and "The blind eye" suprises some growls in the chorus.
The critizism is that sometimes the songs are too much of Exodus and the tracks could have a bit more of a variation. From a songwriting point of view there is potential. I think that a few more soli and leads could have made the album even more exciting.
But anyhow - "Sic Transit Gloria Mundi" became a good album. Fans of more oldschool thrash metal have to give it a try. Let's see how the future of Purify will look like.
