CD review PRIMAL FEAR "Delivering the black"

(9/10) I had mixed expectations when I got this album on my desk. This was mainly because the last records of Primal Fear haven't been that good as the first ones, eventhough they have been pretty successful. They had good songs, but also some average ones. On the other hand there were good releases from the duo Beyrodt and Sinner - like e.g. the last Silent Force album. So what to expect?

I'm happy that I can say: this Primal Fear album belongs to the best ones the band has released so far. Already the first two songs "King of a day" and "Rebel faction" hit you right into your face. Fast, with good melodies and screaming guitars they are a pleasure for each headbanger. After this furious beginning "When death comes knocking", the first single, takes out the speed a bit, but this doesn't mean that it is less heavy. It's a heavy riff monster. Talking about great riffs - "Alive and on fire" and "Never pray for justice" are two other examples.

You almost could say that an album like this also needs a ballad. Sometimes these ballads are overloaded with cliche with a glimpse to a bigger audience. Not in the case of Primal Fear. "Born with a broken heart" became a great song and an emotional ballad with Liv Kristine supporting by doing some backing vocals. Than there is another highlight to mention. It's the almost 10 minutes long epical "One night in December" which is, if I have it right in mind, the longest song Primal Fear ever released. The track has a bombastic sound and orchestral elements. It start with some rain and chiming bells before the guitar starts. The songs has a lot of variations and arching melodies, which makes it really special.

The sound of the album became again great. Mat Sinner as producer and Achim Köhler as engineer did an excellent job and gave "Delivering in black" the powerful sound the album deserves.

Again, for me one of the best three Primal Fear albums. Well done.
